I took a couples days off since I started the roll cage project a week ago and its coming along quite nicely.

Im gonna start with the bad new.....
the windshield received some love from the dash bar, I was kind of pissed because now I got to fit it, probably lexan ?

Hopefully I can start welding the cage in a few days.

First day of welding and its half way completed. About 80% of the cage is/will be TIG welded.

Only 5 bars needs to be cut and fitted. The cage fit quite nicely exactly back where it was suppose to be. Which mean the welding did not affected the cage by twisting it. I guess I did a good job so far!!!

No way could I ever do anything like this myself, but one question: isn't the gap between the roof and cage excessive?

heheh yes it would be excessive if it was indeed like that.

No, I dropped the cage down and forward as much as possible to permit doing the weld required on the top of it due to a 360degrees weld mandatory.

yeah I got a couple comments about the same picture.

The cage should be finish in the next couple days.
Every mounting plates/boxes has been welded today and the cage welded to them which wasn't as bad as I thought due to not having a lot of space to weld around the base.

The cage did twisted about half an inch today before I realized it and I quickly corrected the situation its pretty even on both side now.

hopefully I can finish the welding on the cage and finish with the rest of the reinforcement tubing.

Rollcage is almost finish!!!
Only the gusseting that still need to be completed but should be complete tomorrow. It suck because I was expecting to be finish tonight but due to an annoying headache I left the garage.

It was quite a learning curve to do that whole cage setup. I first started that I wanted a basic 6pts cage with nothing fancy. It turned out to be quite the opposite... There will be some addition later on 2015 but its gonna be around the firewall/engine bay area.

What exactly is the cage designed for? I mean your side bars are just butted up against one another and welded rather then a true 'x' brace. Just seems like alot of excessive tubing where in some cases less tubing would of served the same purpose.

Nice work though.

Nice work though.

keep in it mind that when those pictures were posted, the cage wasnt finish.

that X door bar configuraton will be stronger than your normal X door where you see some builder cutting the second door bar to make the X.
Mine is bended, welded together and will be reinforced with gusset

similar to one of those ;

any other criticism ? Im wide open to explain what I've done.

edit; this X door bars is about what I intent of doing.

and

when I am on it, the reason why I put an additionnal bar from the front holding plate to the top of the A-pillar is to avoid having the roof colaspt on me in a big crash.

and then , you saw I removed the factory bracing at the rear that connect the floor to the strut tower, by adding those 2 tubes I only added 2 lbs but its now a much stronger point.

I agree I could have used a smaller tubing size for a few area of the cage and save like 5-10lbs but I didn't expect to go that deep in this cage, I originally mentioned I wanted a basic cage but I added some safety feature in it and while at it, reinforce some area... its still not finsh and that will be done in the future.
