Why the need for the T56? I had been under the assumption that the stock CD009/CD00A were good up to about 850ish bhp? Better ratios possibly? Is it a physically lighter weight transmission?

T56 has a huge aftermarket. I don't think there's even aftermarket synchros for the CD while the T56 has custom gearsets along with alternatives to synchros. I believe some of the fastest H-pattern drag cars belong to T56s (probably face-plated)

Clarify VR38 cause the VR30 is a major downgrade

VR30 is a lateral move at best, especially with its current state of aftermarket advancement. For someone who wants entry level F.I. power levels it might make sense, but for larger power cars like 650+, it has yet to prove any advantages, and comes with its own disadvantages.

Now that Nissan will sell you a facelifted Z34 chassis with a VR30 in the next few months, its hard to justify that swap anymore unless you are just majorly invested in bodywork on a 370z project or hugely opposed to the new Z style.

Keep your story consistent guys

sheesh
both are open deck blocks and both seem to hold roughly around the same power levels, perhaps with the vr30 being slightly more reliable at those levels. effectively, if you're going for power, the difference is negligible. Stock vs stock vr30 is hands down obviously better simply because it has factory turbos.

I tune the new 3.0s all the time, honestly nothing will ever sell me on them because they sound worse than a 4 cylinder.. disgusting noise no matter what exhaust they have

Ditto. It's a compilation of the rev limit, LSA, turbo size, and exhaust design. Changing the exhaust doesn't fix the rest but some kids will prefer the mess that is the vr30's exhaust note. It's like it can't decide wether it wants to pop, burble, or rev

I been saying this for years. Yes they are faceplated. No Z will ever make enough power to break those faceplated t56 transmission.

nope sorry there have been aftermarket cd gearsets for 16 years but no one in the z market spends the money on them you can get faceplates, carbon synchros, you name it. People here are just broke. is the t56 aftermarket larger? yes. Is the quality of parts better? no but its easier to justify buying a built transmission for your 900hp vette than it is paying the same amount for your 600hp z.

case in point a 1000+ hp hollinger is the same price as a QD90 but the hollinger sells 10 times better than the quaife because the z is a budget option to start with. GTR owners buy 15K transmissions left and right but liberty has a hard time selling a 1500$ faceplate kit for the z.
