Depending on the weather, this usually takes about 1-3 mins. That's usually half a song to a full song on my iPod.

I wait for oil temps to approach 180* F before I flog it.

On the dyno I make sure all runs are taken with oil between 180* and 205* F.

Back from the dead. Curious for those without an oil cooler, how long does it take usually for oil temps to start moving while idling from a cold start?

Depending on ambient temperature, it may take 2-3 minutes to register on the gauge. Maybe a bit longer in Winter in the higher latitudes.

A properly designed oil cooling system will have a thermo plate to limit flow to the radiator until temp gets close to operating level - ie, it won't make much difference in warm-up time.

Usually, some 370z will come without an oil cooler/warmer. The engine I have doesnt have one but after 5 minutes of idling it should register something at 80F ambient right?

So the question is actually "Why doesn't my oil temp gauge work?", right?

Damn grave digger.

It takes mine about 15 minutes before I start to see the gauge move.

I data log EVERYTHING on my G37...
In looking at the data and doing some quick math, here is an average temp increase from ambient temp:

• Engine coolant temp increases about 32F/min (18C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM
(until the thermostat start to open, then it levels off)

• Engine oil temp increases about 14F/min (8C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM
(without factory oil cooler)

Roughly right, on a 80F morning, it should take about 4-5 minutes (( 140-80) / 14) before the oil temp gauge starts to move.

And at a 60F morning, ((140-60)/14) it should take about 5-6 minutes for the gauge to move.

Is this accurate to what you have seen?

Sounds about right per my experience.
