Ok, yesterday I feel like the mould really took a turn for the better. Nearly all the problem areas have been knocked out in the main part of the mould and the edges have cleaned up well. Even better, the back corner AND the front of the mould built up properly. As I said previously (at least I think I did), normally people in their right mind would never fix a mould this f*cked up. 3.5 - 4hrs went into block hand sanding that atrocity.

Tonight I'm going back out at filling in a few remaining low spots on the mould and then I can knock those high spots down in one more night of block sanding fun. ... "fun" ... heh

Ok, I'm sure you are thinking, "that's all fine and well... but what about the corners?" I'm glad you asked!

The hood is going to be placed back into the mould (with release agent around the edges). Then 6 or so bar clamps will be used to lock in the hood. After that I will build up the edges with tooling gel, fiberglass and then more tooling gel. All the corners should be well defined after that. THEN I will be on to fine sanding, all the way up to 1500.

Probably a few more weeks at this rate before I get to lay some carbon/kevlar. Which reminds me... I need to make/buy a resin catch and a scale to weigh the carbon (needed to get the correct amount of epoxy).

On a side note... I've decided to run an accusump on my engine. I'd prefer to have a full scale dry sump but can't really justify that expense. Accusump seems like a good compromise.

I kept a running list of installed parts on a different web site. I'm going to keep the running list here and on my computer. Inquiring minds will know what it takes to build out something similar. There's honestly a few items missing like all the small stuff, nuts and bolts (that adds up).

My buddy kick started me going on my cold side of the build by fiddling with a pipe on my car. After seeing him get the general area for a boost tube I ran with it. I have one more tube to mockup on the passenger side. A pie cut was needed on the driver side, so it turned out not to be a straight shot after all. The build really turned a corner with having the cold side nearly done being mocked up. I couldn't be happier.

Last leg of the cold side completed. I had a bit of fire under my A$$ to get out there and wrap it up.

Looks like the CF mould full on sh1t the bed. The pin on hood has been dashed for now. You guys have seen the whole process, cradle to grave. The corners of the hood require too much work to bring back up correctly. The issue is not with the low spots on the side of the hood, but rather how the mould is down away on the corner. The mould needs to be stiffer which would require additional layers of fiber glass OR a carbon fiber shell. I would have done a CF shell if the mould met up properly in the corners. The mould was really starting to work out in a lot of areas. A line must be be drawn the line in the sand somewhere.

I'm going to make a one-off pin on hood for my car and apply all lessons learned; however, I will resume that early fall when temperatures are perfect. I'm also shelving the cowl for now too. Next hood will be perfect on the tooling gel and a shell of carbon fiber. The price difference is not that big and will be WAY easier to move around. I am slightly disappointed but not at all shocked by a setback. I learned SO MUCH from the experience. Well worth the material waste IMO.

Moving on, I started in on doing the hot side. I used lots of tape and time to get the adjustments right. Working with pies allowed for really trick piping configuration. I'm 100% going to have a pro TIG the pipes due to visibility and leaks. The pictures pretty much do all the talking on the pie cuts. It's tedious but give great results.

Take note at how the front of the mould was rebuilt, it was completely garbage previously


These sides of the mould really started to come out well. The front right corner would need to be built up and there is extra work needed to crisp up the corner.

Right back corner ended up being the deal breaker. It was close but I feel I’d spend 100+hours trying to get it perfect.

What you need to do. Is to put some wood bracing on the backside of the mold to make it rigid.

It definitely wouldn't hurt! I plan on using my 12k and laying it at 45 degrees multiple layers. Trust me, it will be good with 5 layers.
