the trouble with the vvel is that to set it properly you don't need a consult3 but you do need to to have the actuators in the correct position before setting the sensors. this is typically achieved using the plastic assembly hold fixtures that ship on new vvel actuator assemblies but other methods can be used. then from a fresh assemble the car is powered up with the motors disconnected so that the vvel control module doesnt move them out of postion while monitoring the voltage from each position sensor and setting it to the correct value per fsm. all you do with the consult is open that log channel. once the sensors are calibrated you plug the motors back in so the vvel can start working. plugging in the motors and turning the ignition on before setting the sensors base reading will move the vvel system out of mechanical position which wil move the position of the sensore once calibrated. That is the sole reason nissan tells you to throw out the actuators any time you take them, or their sensors off the motor, and to never run the calibration twice as when not from a fresh assembly you can not control the base position of the vvel system. to be clear when the ignition turns on the control module commands the vvel motors to sensor zero so if the sensor are not in the correct position it will move the actuators to match where the sensors are set now and no amount of performing the calibration procedure will help. unless the changed the software passed 2013 last time i had hands on vvel engine that still used actuators was a long time ago.

MA has done many of these. I have to think they have it down. My current issue is a problem that I had before I took the car to them. The car would feel flat and lazy. It was if I was only getting partial throttle. Shut the car off and cranked it back up. Same issue. First time I wiggled the connector on the drivers side throttle body. Cranked the car back up and I was good to go. Second time I wiggle just the cable. No change. Wiggled the connector, good as gold. 4th time I disconnected the drivers side throttle body connector. Plugged back in and all was good. It would only happen in the summer months on the way home from work. No codes, check engine light, Nothing. If the new throttle bodies doesn't fix the issue it has to be an issue with the VVEL. I will be stuck in TURBO BUILD HELL.

You mentioned wiggling the cable and connector to fix the problem. Are you sure it's not a cable/connector issue, not the throttle body itself?

I am about positive. I looked over the connectors in the cable really good. I didn't see any pushed back. They all appeared to be normal. I have diagnosed many a wiring harness issue. It is the first thing I looked at. The only way to say for sure NO is to go up to MA and looked at it myself. I was trying to avoid that. It did cross my mind.

By the way, when I worked as a tech for Nissan, wiring issues, chronic check engine lights, broke wires in harnesses, etc was my specialty. I always got those cars. None of this stuff is new to me except for the VVEL system.

I figured it was something you had looked at and had pretty much ruled out but I had to ask. I've overlooked some of the most obvious things before.

UPS is screwing me. It appears I paid for a service they could not deliver on.

Yes it is. UPS has stood up to it's name again. Un-Predictable Service.

The package is in UPS purgatory of IN-Transit. It didn't make it to Baltimore, Maryland.
It says it was delayed. No shiet Sherlock.

And FYI on something slightly off topic...if FedEx somehow charges you incorrectly, less than what they should’ve charged, they can add charges to your credit card afterward and there’s nothing you can do about it. CC company will side with the carrier.

Don’t know if it’s the same with UPS but I imagine the same.

JARblue 05-09-2019 10:46 AM

If you want to get back at shipping companies, it's not difficult. Package up a bunch of rocks in a box. Ship them overseas using a credit card. Then report the card as stolen :twocents:

Spooler 05-09-2019 11:23 AM

I have already called them. I will be getting a refund.

I ask for my money back. It's a bad deal when USPS is cheaper and faster!

Throttle bodies have been installed. Car went back on the dyno and is doing as it is suppose to. No final numbers. The tune has not been finished.

Not to throw a wet blanket on the party ... but do you have a support system in place after you take 'er home?
My car threw an Service Engine Soon --- CEL light about a week ago and this is what I've been finding out:

No one wants to touch the car "If they didn't build it - they don't want to touch it".

The ECU seems to be locked or access blocked (EcuTek?) and an average scanner won't read the ECU.
I finally did find a guy who was able to read the codes but only after resorting to his $2500+ Autel MaxiSys scanner.
Won't get in to the long of it here, but the short of it is I might have to go stand alone computer for engine management...the tech says that is the way I need to go.

I'm having to seriously look in to it ...

My support system will be me. If you have Ecuteck on a laptop or the Bluetooth dongle with App on your phone you should be able to look at the codes. Yeap, taking it to a dealer or local repair shop is out.

Awesome ... glad you have the tools and knowledge to handle it.
I had originally thought that there were enough custom shops in my area (including a few GTR specialists) but was really thrown a curve ball when none of them wanted to even take a look at the car ... hadn't counted on that for sure.

It can be a challenge. Give Jon a call on your issue. He can help you out. A standalone for our car is not cheap. Motec and Syvec ECU's. That will make it even more difficult for most shops.

Have Jon sell you a Ecutek dongle or bluetooth dongle. You can do some data logging and send data to them. They can then make adjustments and send you a new map to download into you ecu.

I've reached out to Jon and he's responded. They are really backed up with work at the moment, so I don't know how long the car would be down there.
Had been hoping that I could find an interim tech up here to take care of the car should it need it.
No one in my area does EcuTek for the 370z. Closest place is RAD in Long Island
Real Auto Dynamics - Home
A hassel to get there for me ... and having to flat bed it is ex$pensive.
Some of my issues aren't Tune Related so I've got to get them taken care of first before anything else.
One of them sounds very much like your TB issue --- going flat and losing power.
It also stalled in the middle of a car wash and wouldn't start again for over an hour.
I'll be reaching out to Jon again within a few days. Am having the oil changed and checking the filter for break in debris.
Had expected some tweaks being needed early on after the build.
Much Thanks for your input ...

Thanks, it'll be OK, just have to decide on the best course of action.
Going stand alone computer was in the extended plan - perhaps for the upcoming winter build.
Might have to move that plan up a few months.
The tech that I've been working with owns the shop and is a racer himself.
I've come a long way with the car already ... have learned a lot and have made some friends along the way.

You will get there. Your car has been down a long time due to the fact it was stuck at the other shop for so long. It will take a bit to get the bugs worked out.

Vinny Ten ...
I heard that he was the go to Tuner for the 350z.
He did the Tune on my 370z when it was supercharged ...
A lot to be desired with the tune and the motor blew 1st time down the track --- the motor lasted less than 24 hours after he tuned it.

URBiN~HURMiT 05-18-2019 12:00 PM

Apology

Sorry for my last post ... it was heartless.
I thank you for being interested and offering to help.
Flashed back to where the 5 year odyssey and seemingly never ending build all started.
In defense of Vinney Ten --- I know his mothers health was a major concern and had just moved in to his new location and the shop was in turmoil trying to get everything situated.
Just wish he had returned my phone calls.

JARblue 05-18-2019 06:36 PM

Sounds like you have nothing to apologize for. You certainly don't need to be defending a poor tuning experience that blew your motor. If he had other things going on in life and couldn't be bothered to do the job right, he shouldn't have taken on the work. No excuses...

Spooler 05-20-2019 07:00 PM

Tune is still being worked on. No updates yet.

I'll be shipping the Z back to MA-Motorsports ... they said that they would take care of the issues and assured me that they are minor.
I will most likely upgrade to the Motec M150 ECU when it is down there.
Also thinking of having only a base Tune put in and do the final Tune up here.
JR Tuning (Prime Motorsports) is only a few miles from me.
They now specialize in Subaru's mostly but are also awesome with Nissans.
https://youtu.be/9iVVMUyX-LE
This might take the load off Carl and hopefully get my car back sooner.

A Motec M150 for the 370z will cost 8 to 10k. The problem is getting a tuner that knows how to tune everything with it. I am not sure if you have looked into what all is involved. I have. It will take someone with knowledge of the platform to tune with it. It will be more difficult to get someone to tune a Motec M150 than the stock ECU on Ecutek on a 370z. I only know of One Twin turbo car that was tuned with a Motec M150 and the guy that wrote the firmware for the M150 did his own tuning. He now works for Motec. It won't pass emission's either. No OBDII port. Not sure if you have to deal with that in your area.

Spooler 05-22-2019 03:21 PM

Thanks Spooler ...
I have checked in to it but always room for more input.
My car failed inspection here in NJ and as it is now it won't ever go thru inspection unless, as one tech put it, I return it to OEM status.
There were a few emissions systems that were removed/disabled (EVAP and EGR) and the Inspection facility could't read the ECU via the OBDII port.
Seems that it is locked out in some way...EcuTek ??? or ???.
Checked in to the Haltech ECU as well ... same situation as the Motec but less expensive.
MA-Motorsports --- Carl --- can tune the Motec.
Ray Shake was supposed to do it this upcoming winter but he has left the company.
Prime Motoring here in NJ (JR Tuning) can also do the Motec Tune.
JR Tuning is very familiar with Motec as he tunes the Subarus.
It's a 17 hour job by the time it is finished...more big BUCK$.
Still tossing this back and forth in my mind...EcuTek or Motec.
Will be waiting to see how it is when MA-M gets the bugs worked out.
Might have to stick with EcuTek although there is no one here in my area that will do a 370z Tune with it...the closest would be RAD or Vinny Ten ... and they are out in Long Island.
Won't go back to Vinne Ten.
All the 'issues' he 'Tuned' OUT of this blue 350z --- he 'Tuned' IN to my car.
Hot start, cold start, misfires, low power, stalling in turns...you name it...
See the link below.

https://youtu.be/d4eW4uCvSIU

My Z was Stillen Supercharged and tuned with UpRev at the time..
So we will wait and see what MA-M comes up with for now.
Again, I didn't anticipate not having someone up here willing to work on the car if needed.

Spooler 05-22-2019 08:06 PM

The guy who reverse engineered everything on the 370z was on here. Vitviper was his username I think. He is the one who wrote the code (firmware) to make everything work as stock with a Motec 150. You can do a search and read the thread.
