As long as the level on the dipstick doesn't drop more than 10mm per 1.5k miles, Nissan says its ok. I think mine was right about 9mm. I bought my car with 10k miles on it, and switched to 0w-40 at around 20k miles. I had read somewhere that since our engines produce so much heat, and oil temps tend to stay really high, that 5w-30 can thin out enough to slip pass the rings, and that a thicker oil may help with oil consumption. It worked for me.
