Oil question
So... it happened my shop made a boo-boo and used 5w40 instead of 5w30... didn't even realize until I got home. So... What happens if you use 5w40? Will some of the more intricate parts lose lube?
I'm not trying to cheap my way out I was just trying to find some info as I tried searching to no luck. Any oil guru's provide insight? ps once spring comes i'm getting the filter and oil changed to 5w30 |
youll be fine.

Well it's also just been an open book now... I read that the 350 HR's liked the 5w40 over 30 and curious to see if that holds true for the VHR block. I just want to learn more about cars so please excuse my lack of knowledge in this aspect... I just want to learn more :excited: |
Call Z1 and get you some RedLine Oil... Thats what I use and I have had no problems...:driving:

Read your owners Manual especially the non-us table regarding oil weights that are supported.
You will then realize the nonsense that is the US recommendation. :) - b Sent from my Newton 4.0 using Tapatalk |
I wouldn't worry about it too much in a DD. It'll be a little thicker than Nissan suggests but shouldn't be a big deal. Personally, I'd drain it and go back to 5W30, just for a little peace of mind.

It's not like I sit at 6krpm in first for an hour just because lol.... Quote:
I think I'll go with the general consensus and switch back to 5w30 but I'm also tempted to try this weight oil to see if I notice any difference or not. Atleast I have around 5 months to ponder  |
Isn't 1 qt per 3k miles a bit excessive?
the oil consumption maybe related to the fact that the engine is more broken into after you switched to 0w-40 Quote:

i did a mini-overhaul of my CVTC/VVT system about 6 weeks ago. Prior to the work, the car was reluctant to rev beyond 4000rpm. I was running 5w40 to try increase oil pressure but it's effect wore off so hence i decided to overhaul it. This was at 58000km.
What i replaced was the o-rings on the camshaft covers, the seal between the cover and timing chain rear case, the VVT filters, one solenoid valve as it was leaking thru the electrical connector. In short, 5w40 will have slightly higher pressure at operating temp. But personally, i'd stick to the handbook recommendations - 5w30. VVT systems are vital to the performance of modern engines and they can be very fussy with oil. |

So for North America (and that includes you I know :D) its 5w30 only. Yet for the rest of the world there is this lovely Blurb and chart: GASOLINE ENGINE • 10W-30 is preferable. 5W-30 is also preferable and will improve fuel economy. If 10W-30 or 5W-30 is not available, select the viscosity, from the chart, that is suitable for the outside temperature range. Chart shows you can run 5/40 in the right temp range, even 20/50. :tiphat: Out of warranty, my choice of year round fill is likely going to be M1 0/40, which is a 'light' 40w with a fantastic add pack for the price. Under warranty (still is) its been a stead diet of 5/30 full Penn Ultra. - b |
