I think it is fine as long as gas is being pumped through regardless of the remaining fuel level in the tank.
I did hear that some fuel pumps are lubricated by the fuel, but I don't know if it is the case for our cars.

FWIW, I typically use 18+ gallons every tank - rarely do I fill up with less than 17.5 gal. After nearly 70K miles, and a number of brutally hot Texas summers, I've had zero issues with my fuel pump
