That's a stupid rule. Listen to what they say, compare to what others say, compare to your own observations, and apply logic.

If a certain reviewer consistently comes up inaccurate or doesn't give you what you're looking for, cross them off

assuming every one is dirty without doing any sort of thinking is just as dumb as assuming everyone is honest and accurate

There's always a "timely" comparison when a new car releases.

I have no doubts that the CTR can be faster at this point (dude, a lot of things are), but there wasn't a point in this review apart from how far vehicle engineering and design as come to a point that FWD's are taking strides.

Someone literally willing to spend over $40k on a Civic (don't get me started...) probably isn't thinking about an STi or Z. That's such a singular desire. On the other end, someone looking for Z probably doesn't care for a Civic — they're likely set on the fact they're going to drive a 2-door that has little way for purpose beyond driving.

The title should have read- Top spec boosted Type R and STI vs Nissan's aging Base naturally aspirated Z on a track.

They could have at least used a sport for a track comparison and it still would cost less. A Nismo would have been more appropriate.

Imagine if they compared base models. That would be hilarious.

In my opinion the takeaway should be that an article written for the CTR and timed for the CTR release, and using what is arguably the worst iteration of the 370Z out there (also in my opinion) for comparison, still had the Z hanging with the New Hotness in every test - and the reviewers still loved the Z for what it is; a dedicated sports car.

The CTR and the Subbie are technical marvels, and the science nerds at Honda and Subaru have wrung every iota of performance they can out of a cheap family car - and are to be applauded for it.

But at the end of the day they're still roided up family cars with all the soul of whatever marketing department green-lighted them.

Look at the stats in the article and for all its new "better" technology like the direct injection aka carbon building injection etc our old goat (base model) was like dead even. They can say it was better but the stats show damn near equal. At this point it was opinion and we all know who won in the looks category ...hands down the Z.

Top models cars released in 2016 vs the base Z from 2009. Not to mention the other 2 are 4 seater 4 door cars both with turbo charged i4 cylinders vs a 2 door 2 seater NA v6. They might as well have thrown in a MX-5.

Plus, the stats showed our car doing just as well and some of those analyzing preferring the Z. All for less money and better looks....
Gotta be stupid to pay more for the same thing that looks uglier....

I read the article and it mentioned that Z is the only Nissan press vehicle available in the nation. A 2018 BASE Z? C'mon Nissan a Base Z and not a Sport or Nismo equipped..

It's true though Nissan didn't have a Supra or RX7 breathing down its neck to develop the Z into a faster sports car.

Like previously mentioned I took this article and put it in the "all new technology platform, racing a 2009 base production car."

Let me tell you guys I'm a Honda Master tech up here and I already tried repairing a harness on a CTR with 800 miles only to get California to tell me to replace the whole engine harness on a car with less than 1000 miles. I've spoken to a field engineer on the issue and it seems their production techniques on the wiring aren't holding up to this platforms performance level (not sure how that makes sense, seem's like just bad QC from the factory on the other side of the pond."

TBH the guys who drove my car compared to this CTR admits it has more TQ available sooner (makes sense, turbo).

But our Z's with a tune and bolt ons changes their mind every time in the Z's favor.

For comparison the 370z Sport is available right now in Canada for $34G, still priced lower than those boy racers. Nissan always seems to send in the wrong car for reviews, this isn't the first time, get you're act together Nissan!

Instead of Nissan getting rid of base Nismo's. They should've gotten rid of the base Z. And lowered the MSRP of a sport by $1,000.

Then the reviewers won't have that type of exaggerated ammo.

CTR/STI may be faster and more practical, but none of these cars can replace that feeling of a proper RWD sports car. If you are looking for that RWD experience you will just be plain disappointed with both CTR/STI. Ill admit the 370z out of the box leaves a little to be desired, but its still hanging with these cars in its most basic form. The 370z needs some mods for it to really come alive, which IMO make it a great buy because they are a gem on the used market today.

I'm actually fine with all the Z hatred as hopefully it will nudge Nissan to build something better (even though I love mine, which I may add, was about to be traded until I put those PSS tires on it!).

Once it becomes the "car to have" then all the morons are all over it, it gets more attention from cops/etc/bad news. Maybe those wanting to sell it would benefit from praise, but for us enjoying being left alone and quietly destroying unsuspecting vehicles on mt passes, I'm fine with it being dismissed by the moronic ADHD masses that are willing to reward poor aesthetic design with their money.

Some of us have class, and would be embarrassed by the CTR, some of us lack class and want attention at every single second of the day, and those people gravitate towards the "LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" CTR and/or just doing LOOK AT ME modifications. That's fine, there's a type of person for that and a type of audience for that. Not me however. To me that's like the guy with a billion tats that rarely can fight, and is rarely the kind I'm going to have a meaningful conversation with.

Call it our current cultural crisis stuck in a bad youtube feedback loop that rewards narcissism, not classy restraint that was once a timeless and respectable design language. We've let the mouth breathing marketing majors transmit their stupidity over to the designers who plagiarize the next dumber ideas who are then being rewarded for being cowards.

At this point with all the fins/creases/bully grillz, we're in a full blown race to the bottom of "all show and no go" for about 99% of vehicles on the road with the exception of the CTR, which obviously has the track pedigree, but lacks class given the price point. Thank GOD it won't be mass produced.

Not all of us want the girl with a push-up bra, some of us want the real thing, but without the stupidity involved of just a one night stand, which the CTR is just that. Maybe fun, but not the one you're gonna wanna drive every day. The Z to me is a nice blend of fun enough for every day, and beautiful to look at as well. I've never owned a car that received so many compliments (mine is washed once a week you lazy excuse making bastards!) from every demographic.

So yeah, not on board with the "it's new, so it must be better" typical consumerism bs mindset. I'll give up a few seconds to not look stupid.

It's not always just about performance stats and speed. I got to see a CTR in person for the first time this weekend at a car show. It may be fast and perform well, but it looks like a ricer boy racer's wet dream. I mean I don't know who designed it but I think they must've been on crystal meth. Everything seems to be tacked on last minute.

What the hell are those nubby things on top of the rear hatch? There are 4 of them plus a shark fin. And that 5-piece rear wing. Come on!

Also, the car's proportions just seem all wrong to me. I don't know how to put it. It just looks extremely odd. The interior is nice though.
The funny thing is I could see the guy eyeing my Nismo as he was talking about how the CTR is the greatest car ever created.

I tried to like it but damn, it makes the Pontiac Aztec look good.

It was good to see the Z included in the article. I agree with others that they should have used a sport model at least if not the nismo. The type r is as loaded as you can get.

The thing I have noticed, with getting the 3 major car magazines every month for many years, is that the 'winner' of any shootout, comparo, etc is Always the new entry. It is more like a pr piece for the manufacturer of the just released model. That said I do love the type r and was going to consider that before buying the 2016 nismo a few weeks ago. I didn't like that it was a 4 cylinder turbo and minimum of $34K plus not available as a coupe. Very nice car, just not for me.
