What did you do with your Z today V (ON TOPIC DISCUSSION ONLY)

Sounds like it may be the starter. Whack it with a hammer on the side. If it starts, you have a dead spot in the starter and will need to

^^^ this. "Whack it with a hammer" is my stock go-to when normal troubleshooting fails to identify the issue.

but with a caveat.... the magnet is built into the case of the starter. If you whack it too hard, you'll crack the magnet and then you WILL have to replace the starter.... been there, done that..... (but not on the Z)

I've got a 20 lb sledge that I use to split logs. Should do the trick.

Just the threat of using that should scare the sumbitch back to life!

Good luck chasing this down!

Are you sure the clicking you are hearing isn't the pinion gear extending and the battery simply doesn't have the cranking amps to turn the motor over?

Same thing I'm thinking... have you tried jumping the car or replacing the battery (in the event jumping doesn't work)? Both my Z and my Honda Odyssey batteries gave up the ghost without any prior signs. The Z would start with a jump then die but the Odyssey wouldn't start even with a jump; the starter clicked on both, both times.

I worked in auto parts for 8+ years, and it was common that people would discount the battery because the lights would turn on or you would get some indication that there was some power to the car. Bad batteries can cause some funky things to happen. I always, always, always suggest starting there before you start looking for electrical issues.

Also sometimes a car with a bad battery wont even take a jump. So that's always something to consider too.

My dad (who taught me almost everything I know about cars) was the same way. He had a Caddy that wouldn't start without being jumped. He had called me up and said the Caddy was dead, so I brought a battery charger. We charged the battery for about 40 minutes, then switched to engine start and it fired up. I told him the car needed a new battery, he said exactly what you posted "it can't be bad, I have lights and the horn works". I told him "humor me & replace the battery". He did and Voila!!!! no more problems.

I'm pretty sure JAR has replaced the battery already...

Talking

Cars with ECU's need between 10 to 10.5 volts to operate. Anything less, they won't operate to save themselves. And they don't like voltage spikes either.

A battery can show 12 volts and still be bad.

You if you can't get a car to start by jumping. Remove one cable from the battery and jump the car with the battery out of the circuit.
