2017 Nissan Z35 could feature turbo hybrid powertrain | Digital Trends

The Nissan 370Z is due for some major changes in the next couple of years, and that’s major with a capital Z … just go with it.

Motoring is reporting that, by 2017, Nissan’s 370Z may be rebadged ‘Z35’ and marketed as a truly global sports car. The 370Z (and its predecessor, the 350Z) were mainly endorsed in the U.S. and Japan, so the next Z-car could have a much more universal allure.

Spearheading the Z35’s broad appeal with be a wider variety of powertrain choices. Unlike its antecedents, which were solely offered with a fantastic VQ series V6, the new car will house a Mercedes-Benz-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the same one that’s found in the Infiniti Q50. The engine only makes 211 horsepower in the Infiniti (and Skyline abroad), but Nissan has a plan for that.

To thwart horsepower reduction stress, the turbo four-pot will be mated to an electric power source to lower fuel consumption and, of course, increase thrust.

A 402-horsepower turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder is in the pipe too, which will also be given a electric boost. Combined hybrid output hasn’t been confirmed yet, but sources say the six-cylinder will be Mercedes-sourced as well. The engines do sound promising; it will be hard not to miss the VQ V6s, though.

Styling should receive significant revisions, the most prominent of which being an open-top targa layout. Motoring’s sources “feel this feature will appeal to a wider cross-section of potential customers.”

These changes makes sense, considering that, in one form or another, the 370Z has been around since 2002. Yes, the 370Z was thoroughly revamped during its evolution from the 350Z moniker, but both cars were naturally aspirated, V6-powered, hefty sports cars with a similar look and driving style.

The addition of a T-bar roof and a turbo hybrid powertrain should shake things up quite a bit, giving Z-car fans the automotive excitement they’re looking for today with the technology of tomorrow. If Motoring’s report proves to be accurate, the Z35 should be smaller and lighter than the 370Z as well.

The Z35 is expected to start for around $60,000 when it debuts by 2017.

$60k for a 4banger? Or $60k for the 3.0T? I'd buy a Porsche for that kind of cash...

There's like a dozen threads on this already. Including one about that exact article when it came out last August

Here's a couple of the more active threads speculating on the upcoming Z specs.

if it starts at $60K then no...way too much money and a more competitive price point...you start adding options and im sure it can easily go past $70K which is going into GTR territory

Only if it's got fully adjustable (or even magnetic/dynamic) coil-overs, awesome brakes, upgraded interior, killer looks (better than the 2015 NISMO anyway), standard backup camera, is available in 6MT, has a nice aftermarket for boost mods, and won't blow apart when pushing 600+ HP.

I won't hold my breath.

No way anyone is going to buy a Z35 for $60K as wonderful as these cars are and like everyone has already mentioned, your getting into another class of car for that amount.

Just some food for thought though...I've noticed some of these Z35 articles coming out of Australia, where the price for cars is about double then what is is here in the US. There may be some confusion with this $60K price tag floating around.

I watch an Australian review of the Z34 and they said a new one will cost you some staggering amount...

Hell no...

That being said, you haven't given any specs other than boost, hp level, and price. For $60K it better have some serious weight reduction, significantly better cooling, and improvements to the clutch system. I'm thinking mainly about the CSC and CMC, but a nicer pedal would be great too (a linear one without a stupid helper spring).

And lets not forget that for that price the interior needs to be pretty damn immaculate. No one's going to pay for a $60K Nissan that doesn't feel like a $60K car on the inside.

Nissan is fuckin stupid, but I don't think they're quite stupid enough to push out a $60K Z. Maybe $50-55K for the absolute top end model with every option available, but the base model is going to have to be under $40K. And maybe even $30K to be competitive depending on which direction they take with it.

I think it has to be a bad source for them to report 60k. Nissan released the Z with the idea of it being an affordable sports car. 60k would bring it out of it being affordable.

Oh I dunno, plenty of people are willing to pay $110k for a Nissan that looks like a $15k Cobalt on the outside.

Looks are subjective. I wasn't really talking about interior styling. I was referring to features more than anything.

And I bet if Nissan put 600 hp in the Z plenty of people would pay to play as well...

60k for the new Z is ridiculous. I would consider it starting at 33-34k all the way up to 41k. That's what happened to the Z32, they ramped up the price and they made a huge mistake.
