How are you guys able to tell exactly how much your car has burned? Or are you guys just estimating? Like is the distance between the L and H supposed

How are you guys able to tell exactly how much your car has burned? Or are you guys just estimating? Like is the distance between the L and H supposed to represent a certain amount of oil? I always keep mine just below the H.
