i did a mini-overhaul of my CVTC/VVT system about 6 weeks ago. Prior to the work, the car was reluctant to rev beyond 4000rpm. I was running 5w40 to try increase oil pressure but it's effect wore off so hence i decided to overhaul it. This was at 58000km.

What i replaced was the o-rings on the camshaft covers, the seal between the cover and timing chain rear case, the VVT filters, one solenoid valve as it was leaking thru the electrical connector.

In short, 5w40 will have slightly higher pressure at operating temp. But personally, i'd stick to the handbook recommendations - 5w30. VVT systems are vital to the performance of modern engines and they can be very fussy with oil.
