Oil consumption question
Ok, I am new to this forum. I have read tons of posts about oil consumption.
I have a 2009 with 12k miles that I just bought. So my question is this... How many 370z owners have problems with excessive oil consumption? Don't know if I should look into an extended warranty. Is it ok if I use Mobil 1 full syn? I don't do track days and don't drive too hard. Hard occasionally. Thanks guys. |

I use about 1/2 in 3k miles, but I beat the $%^ out of it and its a replacement block on my 2010. If i drove easy I am confident I would burn almost nothing. My red like is 7800 as well...the car sees it often.

If you have to put a quart in every 1000 miles or so, don't worry about it. If this consumption rate increases, then start to worry about it. Use whatever oil turns your crank. There is no best oil. I use whatever synthetic 5W-30 is on sale and change the oil once a year regardless of mileage. Car runs perfect! Same goes for my truck, vette and civic. They also run great. I beat my vette hard but not the Z.

Depends. I got the extended warranty but it may not be right for you. Just about any high-quality oil will be fine for a DD. Many threads about which oil to use on this site. Maybe too many.

There's a chart the Nissan uses to define what is excessive consumption. I think 1qt every 3k miles is borderline. But just search for it and you will have your answer as to what is excessive.
My Z consumes oil more then I like but it's not enough for it to be called excessive. http://www.the370z.com/attachments/3...he370z_com.pdf Last edited by 2011 Nismo#91; 01-29-2014 at 10:22 AM. |

It think it is more than 10mm on the stick in 1k miles, which is a lot...

Oil consumption will vary due to driving habits, but excessive consumption of this type of due to some type of engine component failure. Some people say toasted rings, others say valve seals- as far as I know, there has not been a 100% accepted cause for these particular problems in the 09 engines covered in the tsb. The VQ37 can/will consume oil to the tune of .5-1.5 quarts every 5k miles. Driving style and oil type will make the oil consumption vary. However, you should not have to add oil to the engine to keep it from going bone dry within the oil service interval. As far as how many people have had problems, I'd wager it's an overall very small amount (5% or less), but the amount of owners who have experienced issues is not necessarily indicative of the amount of engines that actually have the oil consumption problem to some degree. Many (most?) owners will not pay attention to the vehicle enough to notice oil consumption without major indication or engine failure, imo. |

Anyone who doesn't check their oil level regularly between oil changes is a fool and deserve to have their warranty claim denied if it runs dry. Owners need to take some responsibility in maintaining their vehicle even if it's limited to checking fluid levels regularly.

For those who had went in for the oil consumption test, did the service manager deny your claim due to having bolt-ons? I plan on taking mine in next month. Should I take any, or all of these mods off?
I have stillen g3, art pipes, catback exhaust, NST pulley set and Uprev. Please advise.

I would recommend watching the oil consumption as my 09 blew it's engine due to excess oil consumption...couldn't even make it to the 3,000 oil change before the oil pan was dry. After a fight, Nissan agreed to replace the motor (via warranty coverage). The car was purchased new and was not driven hard. If you have a manual transmission, you can expect the concentric slave cylinder to frequently go out at any time at any mileage, regardless of how you drive the car, this part has been problematic since the 350Z. This repair will be above $1,000.00, each time...I'm at 50,000 miles and am on my third one now (will be replacing with aftermarket part, which is said to be better) The Nissan part has been problematic in the 350z, G35 and continues to day. In 07 Nissan issued a recall on this part, and has not been able to fix the problem. Last year, a service bulletin was issued on this part, after several complaints were made by it's customers. If you have an automatic, you won't face this problem. You may want to check to see if the steering wheel lock has already been replaced, as there was a recall on this part, and if not replaced, you may be left stranded with a car that won't start. Additionally, to be safe, you may want to check the oil, every time you fill up. Good luck with your car! **Please also read the fine print in the warranty, to know what the warranty covers** Last edited by z man; 02-18-2014 at 11:25 PM. |

Good info. Thank you. I haven't been able to drive much bcauze of the snow. But it appears I still have about two years left of warranty based on my in service date. I plan on either using redline oil or mobil 1 for the first change. |
