Default Oil Consumption

For those of you that had consumption problems, how much oil did you lose? I changed my oil about 2200mi ago and I think I am down about half a quart. Just want to know if that is cause for concern. Car has 18000mi on it.

I've lost about a quarter inch off of my dipstick from the top hole on the stick. That was due to me runnin the hell out of it canyon carving. I've checked mine a dozen times now and it is still the same level with almost 2k on the pan of oil. Did you run your car hard during that pan of oil?

I never run it that hard but this is my first oil change with an oil cooler so I am either burning, leaking, or the levels are just adjusting to the new system. It isn't that heavy of a loss though so I will just fill to H on my next change and wait it out just like the TSB says.

Hey matt piece of advice, after I installed my oil cooler I ran 5 1/8 quart and was way over. So if you just put 5 qt in and nothing more it will be dead nuts on the hole at the top of the dipstick. Hope this helps.

Mine requires more than that it seems. I have a wide cooler though. Pretty sure last time 6 qts got me to the half way mark.

The cooler won't drain out unless you drain it manually. After the install it stays in the cooler and cycles through with the oil in the pan. I have the 34 row cooler.

I wanted to share my story here....

My engine is being replaced under warranty due to oil consumption. I was just in at the dealership today and they said they had to order a new short block.
2009 with 24,000 miles on it. After 1000 miles on a fresh oil change I took the car in to get it measured. Oil dropped 9 mm. This was not enough to be consider "not normal" Today I took it in with 2,300 miles on the oil. The level dropped 18mm. This was enough to warrant a new engine. The dealer just called me up to tell me. No hassle what so ever, they didnt even ask to see a history of oil change receipts.

Default 370z Oil Consumption

Mine used 1 quart every 1500 miles. Went thru Nissan's oil consumption test program. Twice. Nissan agreed there was a problem and had the dealer replace the short block. I don't know if this corrected the oil consumption problem because I haven't been able to drive it regularly since the Service Engine Soon light keeps coming on. Since the short block was replaced, so have the rear oxygen sensor, the front oxygen sensor, an exhaust manifold gasket, and now, the catalytic converter. Each time the dealer has been following Nissan's direction. If this doesn't work, I'm pursuing the lemon law.

Looking back on this, I might have been better off adding a quart every 1500 miles.

Hey there ummie,

My 2009 370Z stopped running yesterday and I brought it in to the shop and they told me that there is internal engine damage due to running out of oil. I just had 5 qts of synthetic put in about 4000 miles ago. There's practically none left in the engine. They want to consider replacing my engine and I don't know if it'll be covered under warranty. Did you talk to Nissan direct or to the dealer?

How many miles you got on it? Engine is covered up to 60,000 miles on factory warranty. I just brought it make to the dealer where I bought the car, they did all the paper work.

If you have the receipt from the oil change, there's no reason why Nissan wouldn't cover the engine replacement under warranty. If the engine eats oil like that, it's defective.

1 quart every 4500 miles is no big deal. How do you drive? If you engine-brake a lot, it might be getting sucked through the PCV system and not past the rings, anyway.

Default Oil Consumption

My '09 has about 34K miles on it now - the oil consumption has been steady at about 1-qt evert 3,000 miles. I used the ester oil for the first couple of oil changes, then switched to synthetics.

Took it to the dealer a couple of weeks ago - they said to put about 300 miles on it, then let them check. After 300 miles, they said they couldn't tell, so I have to put more mileage on it (not sure how much) then check again.

Not sure if I want an engine rebuild - all of the collateral damage that may instigate...
