You mentioned your oil temps being very low and outside temps being low. Are you not concened about over cooling. Oil viscosity is dependant upon temperature. I would think that the oil being too cool you are not getting proper lubrication as it is too thick. The same for over temp on oil the oil becomes to thin and starts breaking down quicker. For me the optimum oil temps would be between 220 and 240 this is where the oil has its best shear factor for best lubrication properties. Tell straight up if I am on the right path with this Bill |

Ideal oil temperature has been debated here many many times. I have never entered my 'opinion' ; however, having operated oil-cooled engines for the longest time, let me share my guideline that I use (see below)
"As suggested by Bruce Anderson, Porsche guru and author of Porsche 911 Performance Handbook, the optimal temperature range for the Porsche 911 oil-cooled engine is 180ºF to 220ºF. Also, according to Anderson, oil temperatures greater than 230ºF are potentially damaging. Yet, the old loop-style coolers started their thermostatically controlled cooling at 182ºF and later the electric fan coolers started at 244ºF! Again, some “experts” have stated that as material design improvements were made, like synthetic oils, engine parts, and gaskets, engine oil temperature became slightly less critical. However, most “experts” agree that cooler oil is better for engine longevity as long as the engine is operating at an efficient temperature of 200ºF." I am not attempting to compare the Z to the Porsche; I am merely attempting to state what I have using as a guideline for my 'oil temperature range.' I will probably follow suit later this spring since I've decided to track the car.

I'm starting to kit mine out, going with a larger 34 row Setrab core and AN -12 Aeroquip lines and fittings for better flow.
Only problem is I'm trying to find a sandwich plate with a 200F thermostat rather than 180F so that it will keep the bypass open just a little longer. Maybe it won't make any difference, guess I should just make an oil cooler cover while I'm at it. |

34 row omg. i'm in TX and due to the cold lately (freezing at night, 50-60 during the day) my car has had trouble warming up. definitely plan on making a shield for the cooler when you're not tracking it if you go that large.

Yep, sounds like a good idea. It's not that hot here up in the NE most of the year so that would definitely be a problem. Core size was based on feedback from those that have tracked with the 19 and 25 row coolers. In all likelihood the 25 row would be adequate, but with the 34 there is guaranteed not to be any issues.

Here is your answer Chris Slicks:
MOCAL inline thermostat -12 AN fitting and 200 degree thermostat. Remote Oil Thermostat - -12AN High-Temp Mocal Remote Oil Thermostat Canton racing makes an inline thermostat that opens full at 215 degrees, -12 AN as well. www.cantonracingproducts.com Your parting out the same idea as my kit, IMHO 200-215 is right were the oil is at perfect Op. Temps. Both company's got quality parts. I know you said sandwich plate, and these are inline units, I know you can get a special order sandwich plate through MOCAL with a different thermostat other then 180 degrees. I just prefer the inline units and have used them before. Last edited by StealthZ; 01-26-2010 at 10:08 AM. |

@StealthZ
Yes I saw those parts as well, but I was trying to avoid the in-line thermostat as it adds unnecessary plumbing. The Mocal sandwich plate appears to have a serviceable thermostat so it might be possible to swap out the thermostat for a different temperature rating. Waiting to hear from Mocal on this. None of the thermostats I've found are a complete bypass, so there is no guarantee that they will maintain 200 degrees in average driving. |

all thermostat plate and by-pass units I've seen are a 90 to 10, allowing 90% of oil to be retained in the engine and 10% to actually flow through the cooler, and when temps reach or exceed the thermostat limits (200) it opens completely to the oil cooler. you don't want it to retain 100% before, as then you would end up having a cold oil surge in your system and would be a shock to the engine. I know MOCAL can do a plate in the temp. rating you want.
