20 Degree Reduction In Oil Temps = $10 Bottle Of Water Wetter

For anyone who has been following my threads knows my continuing quest to reduce oil temps on track. My first step was to get the Stillen race oil cooler. But as my lap times improved I started seeing my oil temps climb to 260 degrees. To combat this I vented my hood, installed baffles to direct more airflow to my oil cooler, and cut large sections of the nose to get more air to the radiator. The result was my oil temps hovering around 240 degrees. However, this weekend I chopped off another 20 degrees.

There is one caveat…I was driving with my power steering pump drained of fluid. I do not know what affect this might have had on my oil temps.IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS THAT THIS WAS THE REAL SOURCE OF MY OIL TEMP REDUCTION PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL EDIT THIS POST!

The change I made was simple and cheap. I drained my radiator fluid and replaced it with distilled water and a bottle of Water Wetter. On track this weekend, with temps at 80 degrees, my oil temps never exceeded 220 degrees!

Just make sure to add anti-freeze before winter and temps drop below freezing.

Not surprised by the gains. in my FD RX7 i saw some major reduction in water temp when i switched to WW and distilled water. Which in turn lead to a reduction in oil temps.

For those who aren't hip on how water wetter works this is snippet from a great article I bookmarked

There are also additives on the market specifically meant for systems that run 100% water, like redline’s water wetter and motul mocool. These products also claim to improve the cooling capacity of straight water to reduce running temps. This is because there’s more to cooling than just the heat capacity of the coolant. What occurs on the boundary between engine parts and the coolant is also important. This is where the additives come it: they reduce the surface tension and “wetting” capacity of the water, which will make a slight improvement in how well heat can be transferred from the block to the water.

Most marketing and testing for these products compares a 50/50 water and ethylene glycol mix to pure water with the additive, and show dramatic reductions in coolant temperatures. Most of these gains actually come from the added water content, and not from a magical additive. However, there is still a benefit to use them because in addition to improving the heat transfer ability they have anti-corrosive and lubricating properties.

As for the antifreeze portion, I think it's a good idea in Virginia (85/15 or 80/20 should be more than enough though). If you garage it all winter, you are probably safe even with 100% water.

However, as a word of warning: On that same FD RX7 I lost a radiator after taking it over to a friends house, staying overnight, forgetting about the 100% pure water and leaving it outside over a cold NC winter night (vs usually garaged). So there is some small risk on that side, particularly for street cars.

WW has been around for awhile. When I was doing bikes. I used it in my race bikes. For trackdays. If you was in the advanced groups. You had to used WW. WW is good stuff, long as you don't forget that it's NOT anti-freeze as mentioned. I give WW a big I'm surprised that more here are not using it.

For those who are lazy like me. And don't want to change the radiator with the seasons. Try Engine Ice. Not as good as WW for knocking down temps, but better then anti-freeze.

ResIpsa, your power steering is a separate system from everything else. So it should have no effect.

Lower coolant temps = Lower engine temps = lower everything temps.
Other things,
No PS pump no heat from the PS cooler.
Were your lap times the same without the PS?

My lap times were a little slower as I had to adjust to the lack of power steering. Fastest lap was 1.27.79 while i have done a high 1:26 previously. However, my lap timer showed the fastest theoretical time I had ever run at 1:24.83 (for whatever that's worth).

I noticed my line was changing as I tended to turn in a little sooner. Also I like to trail brake deep into corners and flick the car into the apex.

Without power steering I wasn't flicking anything. In the later sessions, just as I started to get used to the car I started getting a major brake judder (I believe some wheel weights fell off) and had to back off. The shuttering of my steering wheel on the drive home probably confirms this.

Lesson learned... Always foil tape over your wheel weights.

I run WW, a mishimoto rad, 2 - 25 row Setrab oil coolers (with 180* controlled SPAL fans), and have my stock fans come on early. My oil temps are identical to my water temps while tracking: 210-220 degrees.
