GM never intended it to be anything but a dedicated toy car. The magazine caused all the drama. It's a little deceptive testing it against street cars on street tires. They tested a ratcheting screwdriver against the little philips that comes on a swiss army knife and were surprised when it did a better job as a screwdriver. But that's all it does. If we were testing the ZL1 vs that field, it would be a distant third.

We both said exactly the same thing in a very similar fashion, with that being said im glad it was stated, and stated as such in such a similar manner. There, that should do it.

All of those replies are correct and valid.

It's purpose built, so you get the track performance for half the price with none of the creature comforts.

The other thing everybody is missing is that it's probably a hell of a lot cheaper to maintain as a track slut than a $100-150k AWD dual clutch twin turbo techfest. It's a LS7 and big sticky tires.

VERY good point however, Im having a hard time understanding how much money you really need to own a Turbo S comfortably. What kind of income? Im thinking minimum NET income $1 million? I dunno...whatever but thats a nice #. If I made that, would I track my S? I dont think I would. Maybe once. If I made $2 million, would i track it? Probably not, I want a dedicated Track Toy-GT3 type. So say I make $250K+, I could see myself getting a Z28 actually.

Another good point. Those numbers work for owning the S as a street car. As a track toy, you need to be able to walk away from a total loss without getting your feelings hurt. That's a much higher number than what it would take to just own it and drive it.

A guy who makes $1mm/year is hurting if he balls up a $180k car. That was 20-25% of his pre-tax income that year. That same guy is a lot better off walking away from a wadded up $75k car.

That's why my track car is worth $5k, tops. That's about what I'm willing to wreck and walk away from.

I wish I'd gotten a cheaper car to do this to, sometimes.

Can't help but think about how expensive it is every time i go fast.

Anyone track a Leaf yet? lol. Some sticky tires, suspension mods, coilovers, springs, you just got yourself an inexpensive (maintenance wise) track BEAST, probably take an 86 to school too. lol.

The other catch is the fact that most insurance companies aren't going to pay if you wad up your car on the track. That would be the worst of all bad days if you killed a Turbo S out there.

How many laps could you get off the battery?

I try and always get an agreed value track insurance policy when I go to an actual track.

Definitely increases the cost of a track day, but the peace of mind is worth it.
