Motortrend: Z/28 vs 911 Turbo S vs GTR

For reference, you can buy a year-old 997 GT3 Cup Car for well under what a Turbo S will run you. Then you have a real race car to use

Many in here have argued that the Nismo Z is a close match for a Cayman S, but for a lot less money and a better value. I will agree with that, but also agree that for a 75K Z/28 you will be equal or better than machines costing a lot more. Porsche snobs will not buy a Z/28, we all know that, then again most mullet types don't have 75K to spend on a Z/28. They are marketed to guys above 50 with 150K income or so that grew up with Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, Novas, etc.

A Nismo Z is an awful match to a Cayman S, but that's a totally separate convo :P

Autoweek just had Andy Pilgrim drive the Z28 vs the GT3 at Barber. GT3 was about a half second quicker per lap and he said it was a better daily driver, but the Z28 was a more enjoyable track car.

To be fair though. The base GT-R IS still 30k more expensive than a fully modded from factory camaro.

If Andy didn't say that I'm sure he'd have some explaining to do

There is no way the build quality of that Chevy is anywhere near the Porsche or the GT-R, and that's why its a fraction of the cost.

I'd be surprised if the Vette were faster. It certainly isn't built for the same "durability" on the track as the Z/28 is.

Its all moot. As impressive as it is, and I really am, I really just dont care. Its fractions of a second quicker around a circuit than a GTR or Turbo S. On race tires, with no AC or radio. On the streets this means nothing, a Turbo or GTR will destroy it. Albeit, good job GM, its a HELL of a Track car, thats all it is but its a great one for the price.

It isn't moot... the point is that it beat those cars around the track.

It's the opposite of moot. It's directly relevant since the guy who buys a $75k track only Camaro most likely can buy a 911/GTR/ZR1/whatever. It was a test on a track, and the track car won. So, for track use, the Z/28 is better. Once you start adding in caveats like "has AC and stereo", "on street tires, not R Comps" and the like, it's very easy to work your way back to one of the others. The main takeaway is that, for a track-only car, the Z/28 is fantastic. Once you want a dual-purpose vehicle, a GTR/911TT is almost as fast around the track and much more liveable at the cost of twice the price.

Also, for the non-professional driver, the AWD cars are going to be faster. Randy Pobst is a beast, and his times are not our times.

Ok its not moot. Its moot to me and 99% of others. IF I could afford this Id STILL rather have a Cayman S or M3,4....etc. The issue I have with it is the ONLY place it works at all is on a race track, no way that thing is pulling double duty. Again, for the money, for a COMPLETELY dedicated track toy, kudos GM.
