After experiencing Z cars many years ago I became a Nissan fan due to their quality and durability. I own a Supercharged '98 Firebird that has great quality and I believe that the Mustang over the years has improved as much in the quality arena. However, the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette and Firebird interior always have seemed really cheap to me. I've owned them all. The exception to this rule might be the C7 Corvette which could me my next purchase in 2015 if all goes well. The one thing about American sports cars is that generally the interior is a step down or two from a German or Japanese production car. The fit of these American cars has improved over the years but, the finish and interior not so much over the years.
I too have thought about getting a Lime Green Boss 302 to drive it till it's got 100K on the clock. However, my 370Z will last well over 200K just like all my other Z's. So, if your buying it to drive daily for the next 10 years. Buy a Z. IMO if your buying to drive it for the next 5 years get the Ford. If you are a low mileage driver (10K per year) you might have your Mustang last 10year without major rebuild. That's my take. The Z last longer and will stay in better condition over the years. Just look at a few five year old Z's verses a few five year old Mustang's (some Z members call them Rustangs) and you'll see.
+1 Agree'd. I watched the TopGear episode where Jeremy ran the new Shelby GT500 down to Italy. Loved the power but did not like the lack of refinement. Thats why I have a Z.

Plus the useless comparisons of muscle cars to the Z is annoying. Let me know when the 240 was ever a muscle car. Or any other Z. They have been sporscars from day 1 in an affordable package. They were never muscle or street/drag racers by design.

Even the motoring press know that. The comparison is price only, the competition in class is the Cayman among others like it.

But in the US, most people are shopping on price. Someone that "wants a sporty car" is going to look at every sporty car in their price range.

That type of buyer is far more common than an enthusiast that says "I want a Z" or "I want a Mustang" or "I want a Corvette." I'll go out on a limb and say that most people that actively post on this forum didn't even have to think about buying their Z.

I'll agree with you on that. I do not understand the musle car comparisons either.

If I want straight line power I go for the Mustang, Firebird, Camaro or Vette. Especially if I'm going to gut it. Who cares about the interior then?

If I want tossability I'll go with the Z. The Vette with magnetic ride is close but, it is so much bigger that it's not as nimble as the Z or transitions as well in my opinion. However, I have not had both at the same road course ever.
The competition mode on the Vette might make a difference on the track. However, on the street I'll take the Z every time for ease of use, getting around and parking situations. Those big doors on American Muscle suck.

I always thought that the Corvette was classified as a sports car and not a muscle car. I certainly don't think of the Corvette when I think of muscle cars.

It is and has been called America's Best Sports Car. However it does have the guts in it to be called a muscle car by a lot of folks. Check out American Muscle Car Series Season 3 1968-2001 Corvette. I think it still holds true for Vette's after that as well.

And no offense to all you Z guys... but if I were to cross shop a Cayman... it wouldnt be with a 370z... look at the price point in that market...

6cyl, comparable power and 2 seats. I guess you missed that. Throw in a TTS or TT-RS. By the way the German testers with a TT-RS vs the 370Z preferred the Z. Go figure. Price is not everything.

There are far more dynamics at play as to why the consumer would purchase said car, then simply seat/hp/cylinder count. I would bet that the massive percentage of people who buy both cars aren't even aware of what is under the hood... or trunk...

There are far more dynamics at play as to why an enthusiast would also purchase said car. Not to burst any bubbles... but the 370z's main competition is the Genesis coupe, Mustang GT, and Camaro SS.

Price is not everything, you are correct, but you also may want to consider brand imaging, weight distribution, power to weight ratio, braking performance, suspension configuration, quality of materials used, cost of ownership, and overall performance under constant use.

I somehow doubt the Porsche will have the heat soak issues the 370z does... I'll also consider a Z the next time I'm shopping for an NSX...

Can a Mustang GT hang with a V8 M3? yes...

Do majority of people who own an M3 think of owning a Ford Mustang? lol probably not...

EDIT: also please note at no point am I attempting to discredit the 370z... its a great platform, offers impressive bang for the buck in the area it was designed to contend. I just think people should be aware, the 370z is a 370z... not a Porsche. They are more costly for a reason.

EDIT:
*Flame suit on!*

Agree with you on the price point. However, not many 2 seat sport cars in that Cayman price class to choose from, thus the 370Z fits in that car class category at a much cheaper price and is cross shopped.

Back on topic, tough call OP. Before buying my Z, went to the Ford dealerships here to see if I could test drive a Boss. Unfortunately none were ever available so I test drove the GT on two different occasions. I know it's not the same car, but the GT is an excellent car and felt faster than the Z. However, for some reason it just didn't make me feel connected to the road like the Z did.

While my Z is not a Nismo, I'm sure the Nismo probably would have better feel and the Boss would be faster. So it comes down to whichever feels more like you, don't think you can go wrong either way. Good luck.

I think this is a very fair assessment. Thanks for bringing it home Brah.
