I remember when I was going to buy my 2009 back in March '09 when these things were still really new and VERY rare. First number the dealer gave me was $42,900 not including tax and what not. LOL.

I got it down to $37k OTD, which worked out to a few hundred under invoice.

People post what they pay here all the time, and it's obvious that one should not even pay invoice for this car, because most are paying $500 under.

At the same time, you can generalize that to most automobiles. A dealer can sell at invoice and make a profit in many cases.

Anyone who pays MSRP didn't do their homework.

Especially after the "new" wore off. I think all of us early adopters were getting good deals at invoice to 500 under. Now on leftover stock you can get like $3k under invoice.

I payed less than invoice on my loaded Roadster... Still have yet to see another one on the road but the stealerships seem to have a boatload.

Now if it only came with those Miata doors.

Miata doors are like a $50,000 option.

yeah, just because one pays under invoice doesn't mean they are stealing from the dealer. Your average car buyer negotiates a car deal every few years, whereas the car people do this 10-20 times a day. No one is going to steel from the dealer, they make it back somehow. This is truth 100% of the time, no matter how much they tell you about "how you're robbing them blind" as you sign the paperwork.

Again, do your homework as a consumer. Read up on places like bank websites or automotive magazines about how dealers operate. It's fairly impossible to screw a dealer. If you low-ball them, they'll say no.

word, sometimes they even call you and tell you that you didn't make your $1000 down payment. Or sometimes they mug you in the parking lot.

When I bought my trans am late on a friday, they called me up Monday and said "we need another $2k on the downpayment." I told them no. They said, well, then we will have to modify the contract to raise the interest rate. I again told them no. They said, well, you have to do one of those, or you will have to give the car back. I said "okay, I'm on my way." They called me up while driving over there, they somehow made the deal work. I know there are reputable dealers out there somewhere, but people hate car dealers for a reason.

And people who are only marginally interested in cars and finances have it the worst. They're not going to be bothered to learn "the language of the deal". They might make the classic mistakes of buying based solely on monthly payment, allowing the dealer to place them in a car, or being afraid to walk away if the numbers don't suit.

Hell, part of my routine is that I never accept the deal on the first day, even if I like the numbers. I always leave the dealership for a few days to sleep on and digest all that has occurred. Salesmen, especially sales managers, hate me for this.
