Insuring a street bike?

Okay.. let me try making this as short as possible. I have the 370z, I'm 22 years old I'm paying 3200 for car insurance... my cousin has asked me to get a insurance plan for his bike and put it under my name and register him as another driver under the plan. Now what are the negative effects with this, God forbid he gets Into a accident, or drunk driving, or speeding what kind of negative effects can or will happen. Will my rates for my z go up if there is a moving violation ?

The negative effect is that you'd be a complete idiot to do this.

Motorcycle insurance is cheap -- they don't cover much. If your cousin can't get insurance on his own, then something is up.

Damn right... Unless you want to end up on peoples court someday.
Insurance wouldn't be any cheaper for you than him at 22, unless his driving record is all balled up, in which case you don't want him on yours anyway.
If there is damage beyond what your insurance covers.....guess whos liable for the bill.

I appreciate the desire to help your fam, but your cousin needs to be a man and handle his own affairs. If he is not responsible enough to get his own insurance, he doesn't need to be on a bike. Not your problem and should not be your risk.

I'd extend that beyond insurance to anything with a dollar sign on it.

You're paying 3200 per year in auto insurance for your Z? I don't know NJ's rates but seems very high. I work for an State Farm in CA and only pay about $1700 per year and I'm 21

As for the other issue at hand, everyone else is right.

Tell him to get State Farm; I insure my Ducati through them. If he's young he's boned regardless because rates for young dudes on street bikes are outrageous. This is because street bikes turn even responsible drivers into complete hooligans (*ahem*

) and young dudes are idiots to begin with. Definitely don't put him on your policy.

Op is paying $3200 a year now. By putting your cuz on with your insurance. Your insurance will double if he has a bad driving record. If ANYTHING happens. Guess who will lose his insurance? Guess who will get sued? Guess who might lose everything? It ain't your cuz. If your cuz is asking you to do this for him. He's already in deep dodo.
