I see a lot of people on this forum with some really great hardware. They describe it well and lovingly post pictures of it here for all of us to drool over. I rarely see anyone here post their experience at their recent defensive carbine training course.

The hardware, ammo included is important. The ability to use that hardware effectively is infinitely more important. Before spending much mental effort on which ammo you're going to use in your defensive carbine, I think it's most wise to realistically evaluate your ability to shoot effectively in those scenarios that go beyond punching paper or plinking at tin cans. Go buy 5,000 rounds of .223 and shoot it over the next year. Take at least one defensive carbine course. THEN let's have the discussion about which ammo will kill a human best. Until then, save your money. You're going to be far more likely to just put a lot of expensive ammo past your attacker's 10-ring.

I agree, except when it comes to barriers. In 5.56, you really REALLY need bonded ammo if you plan to encounter them.

As for me, VTAC Carbine 1.5 this November, scheduled for Streetfighter this coming April, not sure what's after that. As always, put them where it matters as quick as possible!

Can't keep up with all you guys postings but want to share....

Put my order in today...

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf8d556c0.jpg

Rock River Arms LAR-15 Elite Comp w/ Chrome Bolt Carrier Group, ERGO right hand grip, Chrome 4.5# trigger, BCM Gunfighter Medium Latch Charging Handle and Dual Loop End Plate.

UNKNOWN_370 12-17-2012 12:22 PM

I switched my NRA membership to a lifetime membership & Dec 26th I will order my M4 rifle. I was holding out for spring to get a specific 6.8 AR but i will probably have to settle for 5.56 and convert it later, if parts arent banned???

Robert_K 12-17-2012 12:33 PM

Exactly why I ordered mine as well. Was going to wait till tax return but had to order today. Guess car part will come from tax return now.

m4a1mustang 12-17-2012 12:39 PM

I'm glad I already got my BCM. I am good on mags I could just use some extra ammunition to store.

UNKNOWN_370 12-17-2012 01:42 PM

My LATE christmas present will be. :excited:

Bought 5K rounds of PMC XTAC M193 a few days ago. It's going up in price and hard to find. I need 2K of that for a course this coming April, and 1K of that is a gift for two of my friends this christmas to go along with the PSA 16" midlength uppers I bought them (contingent upon them buying properly assembled lowers, which they did.)

The other 2K are for keeping along with 1K rounds of MK318 SOST and about 1K rounds of 64gr Gold Dot. Finally got someone to put a few 64g Gold Dots into some deer for me. It's very nasty stuff.

tvfreakazoid 12-18-2012 06:38 AM

I"ve read about the bear AR rifles. Interesting where they put the charging handle. I read in m4carbines that there were some horrible customer service issues and issues with the rifle as well.
I was looking into it but what i read made me not to buy one. This was last year and hopefully they might of solved their issues.

Please let me know how it works out for you. I'm really curious.

quick question, i want to get a bushmaster carbon 15 5.56/.223. does anyone know if its a good gun? i already have a ruger SR9C for cc. i want to get a rifel before obama bans them or whatever is gonna happen.. any input would be great...

m4a1mustang 12-18-2012 07:10 AM

If you want to depend on it for anything other than plinking I would stay away from Bushmaster. They aren't exactly a leader in quality or reliability, and I'm not really sure how well these composite ARs run.

For not too much money you can get into an entry level Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense, Spikes Tactical, etc. that you can put through hell if need be.

Reviews as of this year are good thus far. Lock and load channel made a pretty nice piece on the rifle. I'm doing further research as we speak and I'm strongly considering just getting the upper. An upper can be had for about $1000 and the other $900 is the lower, magpuls parts and the FN barrel? The FN barrel is the only thing worth some money to me. I can just put the upper on my stag lower but I'd rather have a second lower. QUALITY Lowers are extremely scarce right now though

I can imagine that last year there were issues. It was introduced in the 2011 shot show and it's 70% proprietary parts. I hope customer service is better than what you've heard?
Main reason why I want this particular AR is that it's design truly addresses every weakness of the "Piston AR".
But damn, the frenzy is on... Most sites I go into, they are out of 90% of the good AR's

I did however find an SR556. Anyone have experience with the Ruger SR556? I hear not very accurate compared to other platforms but still very solid.

It's a notoriously bad gun, even for a Bushmaster.

Interesting article I found tonight...

Obama backs new assault weapons ban

m4a1mustang 12-18-2012 07:30 PM

Ordered some 9mm to stock up on. Couldn't find any Gold Dots at my usual place so I got some HST instead. I should be fine.

Of course he does. Things are going to get interesting for us over the next few months.

Because of the Republican house we're probably fairly safe in that they won't allow an AWB to pass. I'm more concerned about what the White House will do administratively. How much can they get away with via executive order? Could the EPA hit us with lead ammo regulation? Who knows.

I hope you are right about the Republican house. The last time there was legislation rushed through due to reacting with emotion we ended up with the patriot act.

I have a relatively higher opinion of Bushmasters, but I wouldn't buy one that wasn't manufactured in Windham, Maine and I would especially stay away from the carbon lowers.

If you want to go with the standard in ARs, I would also recommend Colt.

The bright side is that whatever he does with his royal decrees the next president can undo them. Over the last few days I can't believe the stupidity and lack of logical thinking I have heard.

Hey people...the term "assault weapon" is a term made up by politicians. Yes an "assault rifle" is a class of rifle.

SgtGoldy 12-19-2012 01:03 AM

So I've been drooling over the H&K 417 for awhile and I think I am about to break a build something like it. I have just heard a problem people seem to run into is feeding 7.62 rounds. Any thoughts?

Robert_K 12-19-2012 01:30 AM

I have plenty of 9mm, .40s&w, .45acp and 12 gauge. However I did just order 600rd of .223 Hornady & 400 of PMC.

i decided to go with S&W M&P sport AR-15.. it had good reviews and shoots both the .223 and the 5.56 nato... just waiting for cabelas to have them back in stock.. almost every gun store i called was out of stok of AR'S and the ones they had left were over $2000. so i hope cabelas gets some in before this ban happens...

Good luck! With the recent events, ARs and ammo is now impossible to find. And prices will just continue to rise. This is why I just ordered my RRA. 90-120 wait but at least I know I have one ordered for me.

MacCool 12-19-2012 07:53 AM

In this environment, the consumer-grade ARs like the S&W's, Bushmasters, and RRA's are going to be hard or impossible to find.
