hey guys, sorry for the thread jack, but I turn 21 on the 21st of this month  rather than be another statistic, I've decided rather than drink I'm going to get my first handgun. My father and I have been shooting for years, and I already own a Kel-tec RFB, Mossberg 500, and rem 700 in 300wm. I was looking for suggestions on which handgun. My dad has an HK USP that has the nastiest trigger I have ever used so I don't want to go that way. I found a screamin deal on Sprinfield Armory lightweight operator 1911, are they any good? I know SA is a premium brand, but I have never actually had any range time with one.

If you have a range that lets you rent pistols, I'd rent a handful of different types and see which one you like most. It's really too subjective to get advice from other people. (Plus, we don't even know what you're using it for ... concealed carry, target practice, etc.)

SA makes nice 1911s, so if that's the type of pistol you want and you get a good deal on it... go for it!

well its my first one, so I want something basic but good, and I'll modify/buy more specialized if needed. Besides, the 1911 is like the civic of the gun world, theres so many aftermarket parts for it you can basically make one into whatever you want haha

tvfreakazoid 09-17-2012 05:16 AM

Good buy. Practice practice and practice.
Taking a basic pistol class might be a good idea to. Learn some things and what not.

Something wrong with it? I have many HKs and none of them have a "nasty" trigger

I recommend a HK USP .40 or .45

m4a1mustang 09-17-2012 12:45 PM

probably doesn't like double-action trigger pulls.

Vichtz 09-17-2012 03:35 PM

yea not a fan of double action triggers. I just have a hard time keeping on target having to "repress". Thats why I'm staying away from the Glock. One isnt better than the other in my mind, just prefer single stage trigger  Havin fired a handfull of HK,Glock,1911,CZ,etc Iv'e found I hit best with a 1911. I've just never used a Springfield Armory lightweight operator before though, so was seein what yall thought if you had one. yea
my cousin is a swat director/detective and I have been getting alot of time from him so I feel pretty confident in my abilities, but I would like to take some classes in the future. CHL will come eventually. Whether I get a seperate carry gun or not will only be told by time and unfortunately my wallet haha.

m4a1mustang 09-17-2012 03:37 PM

I've got a SA Range Officer which is a pretty nice range gun. Super accurate.

All my carry guns are Glocks. I shoot them pretty well but I shoot the SA way better.

xdeslitx 09-17-2012 03:41 PM

my SA Loaded is a range whore lol

~ 10K rounds since march and still running strong

I'm not entirely sure what your looking for but for a Range Rat in Springfield Armory I'd look at the Loong Slide 5.25"

I use a "Long Slide" Glock for Range and General Pistol fun ;) however I have several guns for daily carry purposes:p

BlackZeda 09-17-2012 07:15 PM

Wouldn't the ultimate range gun be a .22 LR revolver? The reasons I would come up with would be ammo cost, accuracy, (lack of) recoil...

My great uncle, when he taught my father, and then when my father taught me, used the biggest handgun my dad could hold and would random up dummy rounds. best range practice ever. afterwards, most other handguns felt graceful and a lot of bad habits happen moving up, not down. granted this is all anecdotal. YMMV

Brilliant! You have sold me...I think I will pick up a S&W .44 Mag and throw a dummy round or two in the cylinder when I go to the range. Would that be "range roulette"? It's not like I need an excuse to buy another handgun nowadays

I have a H&K USP .40 Compact and the trigger is fine on it. Shoots perfectly straight right out of the box too

I agree, Ruger MKIII 22/45 Target Model is what I use for that purpose:iagree:

I guess it is all relative; compared to a .357 Mag or .40 S/W my 1911 feels like a gentle beast. I still want a paper target to "go ahead, make my day" :)

I have always liked those and see one in my future...I love Ruger!

Ever since I saw Top Shot the Volquartsen custom Rugers have intrigued me, but a stock one would be more than sufficient for some target shooting fun. I am sure you would agree

I have a 27 year old Ruger Mark II target that I recently upgraded with a Volquartsen trigger group. It is a superbly accurate target/plinking gun. The VQ trigger as an upgrade is amazing.

That's a cool gun...there is something about Rugers that make them seem indestructable. I like the Volquartsen rifles but the pistols are a little too fancy for my tastes so putting one of their triggers (by your recommendation) on a shiny new Mark III might be the way to go.

Ackrite 09-22-2012 08:56 PM

Does anybody else use the iSnipe app on their iPhone? I would highly recommend it, especially if you a noob to distance shooting like me. I just got back from a day of shooting in the high-desert in CA to finally get to use and zero my REPR. I've never really used a .308 passed 100m before, but after I zeroed it I took a silhouette out to 500 yards and with the app I was pinging it from the very first shot. It felt good to not waste almost $1.75 each on any missed shots. Next time I'll try add a couple hundred more yards.

Also finally got to use my new Kimber 1911 for the first time. With all the hate I see on that brand I expected to be disappointed, but I experienced nothing negative with the ~70 rounds I put through it so far. Definitely easier to manage the recoil and follow-up shots compared to my Glock 30.

So I am in the market for a cheap, reliable and compact rifle...which means I am looking for an AK. I have read a lot about 7.62 vs 5.45 and have decided that I am going for the latter.

Is this a dumb idea considering the lesser availability of the ammo? Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer for a civilian version AK-74?

 AK-47 (not AK-74) is 7.62mm. AR-15/M4 is 5.56mm (not 5.45). You said you've read a lot about 7.62 vs. 5.56* and that you're going for the latter (which would mean you're going for an AR), but then you ask for a recommendation for an AK rather than an AR. Can you please clarify? lol ;)

m4a1mustang 09-27-2012 08:43 AM

No I think he's talking AK47 vs AK74. One is 7.62x39 and the other is 5.45x39

That is correct...I am looking to buy an AK with a folding stock, but now I am trying to decide between a AK-47 (7.62mm) or AK-74 (5.45mm) clone. I have read that the 5.45 round has better ballistics and is much more accurate but is less available. I wanted to go to the gun show this weekend to see if there was any bulk 5.45 ammo around but didn't make it, so I wanted to see from the rest of you if you have found it hard to get your hands on such ammo.

m4a1mustang 09-27-2012 09:24 AM

Selection does seem very limited on the ammo sites I use.

Yeah, I am becoming a lot less gung ho about an AK especially since if I were to get the good caliber it would almost defeat the reason for owning an AK. Instead I might buy a Ruger Mark III Hunter which in my mind would make a superb target and survival firearm. Colorado is rich with squirrels, rabbits and ground hogs and I can carry 2000 rounds in my back pocket (which would cost $8.99 at Walmart). I could use it for food and use my AR for the two-legged predators in some hypothetical survival situation. Plus both types of ammo are plentiful in the US.

Speaking of buying AND building an AR; Here is the final incarnation of my new LMT gas piston rifle:

16” LMT Defender 2000 MRP CQB gas piston
Geisselle Super Semi-Automatic trigger
BCM Gunfighter charging handle
BAD *** (safety selector) lever
Troy Industries Ambidextrous magazine release
Magpul MBUS Front GEN 2 sight
Magpul MBUS Rear GEN 2 sight
Magpul RVG front grip
Magpul BAD lever (ambidextrous bolt carrier release)
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul aluminum trigger guard
Magpul CTR Restricted butt stock
Trijicon RMR red dot scope
BattleComp 1.5 Black Oxide compensator

Mt Tam I am 09-27-2012 05:56 PM

Last week I purchased a post 1950, pre 1968 Walther PPK, in 7.65mm or 32ACP. I have wanted this since I read and watched James Bond as a kid. I have had many PPK/S and 380 ACP pre and post 1968 models, but this is Bonds Caliber.

I told a guy what I just bought and said you want to buy my WWII PPK for $25 less? Heck yeah.

So in one week I accquired two PPK 7.65 pistols, after waiting forever.

:excited:
