Yep, art pipes

The flame was likely due to the lack of a tune at the time.

lean wouldnt make sense. rich with excess fuel to burn makes sense.

I think edub370 was right. Running lean will cause engine running hot and detonation thus might shot flame. Running rich will only left a lot of un-burnt fuel which is a mess.

if you weren't tuned and your car had tons of breathing mods you were running lean. tuning will generally add more fuel into the mix to bring u back to stoich.

I don't think this is necessarily true because the car seems to come from Nissan already running incredibly rich (probably to account for the higher compression as well as idiots who use regular gas with lower octane). Even with my R2C intakes, my tuner said I was running outrageously rich.

Hmmm, that sux. That's why our gas milage is only 17-21?? But anyways, in general if you add more breathe mods like CAI you will run leaner compare to the stock. And running lean is always more danger than running rich.

I heard that if a N/A car is tuned properly it wont shoot flames... Anyone else here of this? My buddies 6spd TL use to shoot flames, he had every possible bolt-on mod for the car, no-cats but no tune at all.

Oh and what is the GoPro mounted to? Thinking about making a vid like this tonight.

Edit: As long as it's just a video clip not a live show.

Lean won't cause flame. Rich will. (Within reason, you can be so rich that your EGTs are really low and thus external combustion won't happen) The hot fuel vapors meeting cool oxygen = burny burn.

That said, you usually see it in turbo applications where there's a spike in exhaust fuel content on up-shift due to boost fall off and the exhaust is really hot due to being turbo (naturally higher EGT, turbine heating exhaust gasses a little immediately off boost).

Well, after some research the anwser is both lean or rich will cause the backfire which leads to shotting flames out of the exhaust...

Quote:
Backfiring in internal combustion engines occur outside of the combustion chamber, and are typically the result of an improper air to fuel ratio. An overly lean air-fuel mixture (i.e. an overabundance of air) can lead to a failure to ignite in the combustion chamber, also called a "misfire". The unburnt fuel then enters the exhaust system, where hot components can cause the fuel to ignite unpredictably. Alternatively, rich air-fuel mixtures (i.e. an overabundance of fuel) can result in incomplete combustion, again causing unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust system.

That's true as well! I guess the afterburner looking flames like the video had can be a lean condition and the crazy flame thrower style flames could be rich... Meh.
