Question HKS Hi-Power Exhaust... Your thoughts on something...

Some of you may know that I run this exhaust on my car and I love it. I also run the Motordyne ART pipes, which I also love. My thing is though, I think the exhaust is still a bit too quiet.

So I've been thinking... (I know, a bad thing - LOL).

This exhaust system is modular. You have the H-pipe section, the resonator section, and the rear muffler section.

I've noticed visually, the resonators and mufflers look identical, same exact size and diameter. I don't know if they're the same on the inside or not, but who knows.

Now what I'm thinking, what do you think would happen sound-wise removing the resonators section and fabbing up straight pipes for that section?

If I decide to do this, I'll do them up first in plain old exhaust pipe and flanges. If it works out and sounds good, then I'll redo it in matching stainless and flanges.

I would leave the rear-most resonators, but run a straight section in place of the muffler (Motordyne style). You'll definitely want to have them weld a brace for the resonators to the new piping as well.

Opening it up even more it's going to sound really Ricey raspy above 4k.

You're changing the sound level from a subtle aggressive designed at certain db level to a louder not so great rasp sound.

The sound change is noticeable like going from a stock hfc to test pipes.

I don't like the sound change with the test pipes myself so kept mine with the hfc's.

It was engineered with a certain note in mind at higher rpm's and altering it to make it louder is just going to ruin it's unique exhaust note.

If you want something louder find another exhaust to butcher

Thats just my opinion as this is a subjective topic.

Motordyne has resonator chambers at the rears not mufflers. It has one central muffler where the middle resonators are in the HKS kit. And then there are the resonator chambers again at the ART pipes he is running.

Personally I wouldn't donth swap you're talking about. However, when I had both motordyne exhaust and ART pipes (the pipes are gone now) I played around with different CAI and that made a huge difference. Not sure what you're running but between the G3 (QUIET!) and the Injen (VERY MUCH NOT QUIET) the change was incredible. I like the sound of the G3 but the Injen just roared. Literally. It was loud and smooth without being raspy at all. anyways, might be something worth considering.

The HKS has rear resonator chambers AND rear mufflers. I was simply referring to losing the muffler and keeping the resonator, i.e. like Motordyne. Leaving the resonator would keep the rasp down but losing the muffler would turn up the volume a bit.

However, I can't agree with your intake comment more. OP - if you want sound, research some loud intakes. I got JWT Pop Chargers for a steal and paired them with Z1 tubes and the noise on WOT is fantastic. Hard to beat a good intake roar.

No need on messing with intakes. I already have that covered. Plus, any loud-ish exhaust will overpower any intake.

I considered switching to a non-resonated mid pipe and realized it might compromise the beautiful tone this combo produces (although I too believe it is a tad too quiet for the times I want to be loud).

My other option was to switch to this https://www.nengun.com/amuse/r1000-exhaust-system

I have to admit, it does sound good, refined even. I just hear it inside though, so it doesn't sound all that loud to me, even with the windows down. I guess I need one of my brothers to take it down the street so I can hear it on the outside.

I agree it does sound quiet in the cabin with the windows up. But hearing outside definitely helped me sway my opinion back to liking it.

I'm running HKS on mine with the 1320 performance pipes and LOVE the sound my car makes. Check my review on the 1320 pipes tho.

This exhaust alone is very tame, I have it.

I have heard people pairing it with Art pipes and it really opens up which im sure you know, try LTH, that would be the next step
