Anyway, the simple answer for the OP is: You can leave it in D and use the paddles to downshift quickly at need while staying in D. The ECU allows this, and switches back from M to D after a few seconds. That is the fastest way to drop a cog or two while remaining in D. Mashing the pedal is much slower.
