That is (just barely) in spec. I don't have the FSM on this computer, but the FSM is referenced in post #2 of this thread, and it specifies 14psi as the minimum (oil is at 180f versus your 200). Hold the RPM at 2000 with no load. FSM says the minimum should be 42psi

I am reconnecting my defi gauges tomorrow, I'll let you know what numbers I'm seeing

You are fine. The factory spec is more than 14 psi at 80C/176F with an idle of 600-700 RPM.

Also keep in mind most gauges have a typical accuracy of +/- 1-3% of full scale. For a 100 PSI gauge with 1% accuracy it can be off 2 psi (+1 or -1)

Now, if it is consistently around 10 psi at idle, then it may be time to look into gaskets.

If you're running a 100 PSI gauge on your Z, replace it immediately. 370Zs need a 150 PSI gauge.

I've got some questions. They may or may not be dumb; I certainly am.

What does it matter if the gauge doesn't go above 100? The oil pressure only reads over 100 on startup, right? So if the gauge maxes out on startup then why does it matter if you can read the extra 20 psi or not?

I mean if it damages the gauge or something that makes sense, but I've never heard of that. I got my gauge to make sure my oil pressure doesn't drop too low. What would be the need to check oil pressure when it maxes out?

To make sure your oil pressure bypass is working. You want to see the high end and see it actually drop after warmed up. I'd like to know pump is attaining high pressure and bypass is working.

Wouldn't 100psi indicate that? Even if you don't see the actual max pressure, you would see it peg 100 for a period of time then you would see it drop below 100.

Sure, but it's nice knowing you are putting out the higher end. Its a good sign of pump health. Then again, if you are putting out specs, who cares I suppose.

As with any gauge, having a scale that is above normal readings, adds a bit more of an accuracy to the gauge. Also, gauges with smaller increments help a lot. My preference anyway.

Then you go digital and then you got everything covered. LOL.

Cheers

To be clear I purchased a 150 psi gauge a year ago. So I'm all set. I was just curious.

I learned something today. I always wondered why oil PSI gauges that read over 100 even exist.

Any gauge that gets pegged on a regular basis will fail sooner then later. Gauges do not like being pegged. You damage the internals and the sensor. A digital would be a bit better at being pegged.

I'd say if it gets pegged on a regular basis, it would possibly get to like it and have a lesser chance of damaged internals. It does make sense that some are better at the pegging though.

There was no way I could just leave that there.

The 100 PSI gauges are perfect for the older v8 that make about 10 psi per 1,000 RPM.

The VQ37 does have high oil pressure in comparison.
