Default Transmission removal and jack stands

Can anyone comment on the difficulty level of pulling the transmission on our cars using floor jacks and jack stands? Need to pull mine to do the ZSpeed CMAK and I don't have access to a lift to get the job done.

Assuming someone has done this, how high does the car need to be for the transmission to be removed?

I haven't done my Z yet. But have done other cars using jack stands. The higher the better. The more room you have to work with, the better.

Ever try bench pressing a Muncie Rock Crusher, BW T10, or a cast iron case Hemi tranny into place.

I did mine own clutch and CMAK in my driveway. I had my car up 2-3 ft in the air. I struggled to pull the trans out but had a friend control the jack, lower it and roll it out while I held the trans.

There's a write up on here that I followed. It was my first time. Everything worked out well

It isn't bad, I've pulled mine a couple times, both times using floor jacks. Give yourself at least 2 feet of clearance to roll the trans out

In terms of difficulty it's a little harder than dropping the diff out, it isn't much worse. I felt like swapping the radiator out was more difficult

I've done it. PITA. But well worth the $700+ in labor savings if you're able. It took me a full weekend to do the work with the help of a friend, but neither one of us had pulled a transmission before. We took our time and had zero issues.

My low profile jack was the limiting factor. It would not raise the car high enough (I think I get about 22-23 inches of lift with it), so I was not able to remove the transmission out from under the car. However, this did not lead to any issues installing the Z1 CSCEK. The space might have been a little more cramped if I had been replacing the clutch at the same time (I am planning to purchase a different jack for the next time).

No. I wouldn't even try. But a buddy of mine bench pressed a Toploader into position on one of my Mustangs after three of us couldn't get it stabbed using a jack. I was impressed.

My 440 Dart Sport that I was drag racing back in the day. That was a weekly event.

I have done this when I did my Zspeed stage 3+ and CMAK. It's not terrible but get it as high up as the jack stands will allow. My experiences were pretty much inline with JARblue

Also when you have to put the transmission back up you will need help, it is one heavy summbitch

From someone who has never replaced a trans/clutch before, I did mine last year and it was tough but 100% doable. Run my car about 15k miles so far and haven't had any issues. My jack stands were almost maxed out making room for it to come out though, and it BARELY had enough clearance to be dragged out from under the car. Transmission jack was a god-send as well. Rebuilt my ZSpeed HD CSC while I was in there and threw a stage 2 south bend endurance clutch in so hopefully I won't have to revisit this for a long, long time.

I pulled my trans on the floor and it wasn't that bad. I would recommend some high jack stands, impact swivels sockets, and 3ft extension really came in handy for the top bolts...

Getting the tranny back in is the tough part. Harbor Freight has a rollable tranny jack just for this the last time I checked. It would be worth it's weight in gold. It is very doable, just make sure you get a tranny jack that will work for you and it will be easy. I have a 3ft extension with 3/8 on one end and 1/2 in. on the other so I can use my 1/2in impact to get the tranny bolts. MAC sells them. I do use a impact approved swivel.

Found an assortment for you.

Thanks for the input everyone. Ended up deciding to have someone with the equipment and experience tackle this for me. Dropped the car off this morning at ZSpeed.
