Default LSD feedback

I've been roaming around the internet looking for updated LSD info. Unfortunately, most of it is dated by at least a decade. I'm looking at 1.5 way diffs. For helicals, I was looking at the wavetrac. For clutch based diffs, I was looking at OS Giken, Tomei and Kaaz Super Q. I'm open to others, but from a reliability, performance, and drivability standpoint, I don't see a lot of data. I don't want something that requires constant attention and maintenance, outside of fluid changes. If a clutch based will last several years with a few events a year, I won't mind it at all. Hope this makes sense.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Wavetrac. Hotrodz has one, so I expect he'll chime in here. It would be my first choice. Cusco is also highly rated.

There's also this thread, if you haven't found it. Good info for sure The Definitive Differential Thread

I just installed a Wavetrac 2 weeks ago. Love it so far, but haven't been on track with it yet. Feels more sure of itself on the twisty back roads though. I'm looking forward to see how it improves my corner exit at Oak Tree at VIR. I'm running the Red Line 75W90NS fluid to break it in, then will switch to Motul Gear Competition 75W140.

What Jar said lol! I had done about 6 track days beside a whole bunch of street driving including the zdayz when Seb said we need to check your diff fluid because you have been pounding the crap out of it. On my return to pick up the car he was like. Everything looks great, you didn't need to change the fluid it is still clean. It has met all of my expectations so far.

Well, I don't want to duplicate another thread lol.

So I'm still leaning hard for the wavetrac. It's literal only con is that the OSG might be a teeny tiny bit faster on a race track, I'm talking like a tenth of a second. But to get that, will require a lot of tuning to get the locking just right. Even then, if you really need to tune the wavetrac, you can mess with the bias plates to change the friction. Additional bias plates cost extra, but that's nice. The transferable lifetime warranty, working with a tire off the ground, and minimal maintenance are other big pluses.

If there is no budget issue, I would go with a OSG. You can have them tune it based on what you would be doing if you talk to them first. 95% of the time, they get it right the first time.

I have a OSG in other cars I drive/drove (Mazdaspeed 3, E36, and BRZ), and I had been happy. They never made noise/chatter when driving on the street and the lockup is smooth.

I got a Cusco for the Z since it was used and cheaper.

I've run both Cusco and OSG...would recommend both, but the OSG is a "friendlier" diff. Both perform really well on track/course, but the OSG is less clunky/noisy.

I have an OS Giken. If you are OK with diff chatter on tight turns then it is the best. If the diff chatter get's on your nerves then the Wavetrac is the way you want to go. Trust me, If the Wavetrac wasn't on national backorder when I did my diff, that is what I would have. I do love my OS Giken but the diff chatter when getting the tires hot and getting off the interstate on the way home does get on my nerves.

There will be diff whine as well with the change to a solid diff seal. I don't care about all the noises....because race car!

Motul 75w140 is what I am using with a little Redline LS diff additive. It is silent, the inside wheel just chatters/clunky in a tight turn at low speeds. I have no diff whine at all with Z1 poly mounts. I really like those mounts. I don't care for a solid mount on a street car. Too noisy. Should I be using the OS Giken diff fluid?

Yes, from what I have read. You need to use the OS Giken fluid. It's $$$ as chit! I have 4 liters sitting on a shelf waiting for me to install my diff.

I read that too, I am trying to be frugal. I will try the OS Giken fluid next change.
