Thiago Alcântara do Nascimento is heir to a footballing lineage of note. His father, Lomar do Nascimento, better known as Mazinho, was a defensive midfielder in the 80s and 90s. Mazinho's career took him to 10 clubs, but he was hardly a journeyman. He was capped by Brazil's national team 22 times, including appearing throughout the canarinha's 1994 World Cup-winning run. Thiago was born in Bari, Italy in 1991 (really? I'm writing 1991 as the birth year of a professional footballer? Oh god I'm old) and began his footballing career at the age of 4 in the Flamego's youth ranks, meaning he really hasn't ever known anything other than the soccer field.

He joined Barcelona's youth ranks in 2005, 4 years after his father had retired from professional play, and has steadily risen through the ranks. His debut for the first team on May 17, 2009 and his first goal the 4th of a 4-0 rout of Racing Santander on February 20, 2010. He's made 6 appearances this year--3 in the league, 2 in the Copa, 1 in the Supercopa de España - and looks poised to make more before the end of the calendar year.

With the squad hurting for depth and supposedly hurting for cash, Thiago's free "transfer" to the first team seems like a no brainer. Arsenal fans would nod in appreciation as it suggests less of a chance Barça will go after Cesc Fabregas (why promote someone and then spend big money on a replacement?) and anyone serious about austerity measure for FCB would also applaud the move. And, really, for a team that trumpets the number of youth players in the squad during the Champions League final in Rome, promoting youth seems like simply the right move to make.

They dont have that option at Arsenal Store USA :( I originally ordered from the UK with the RvP Jersey, but figured if I ordered from their US store, i'd get the jersey in much quicker. And yes, it feels quite nice!

good, maybe they'll keep their fucking hands off Cesc. And I still say that AW needs to buy Elia, we'll need an Arsha replacement soon.

I got a feeling he'll finish his career as a Gunner, he probably doesnt mind the rain like that pussy J.A.R.

lol JAR

Red370 11-15-2010 07:02 PM

I refuse to call him anything else, asshole got me all pumped n stuff because he was scoring boatloads and winning matches for us, next thing I know, hes not used to the weather and whining about how much it rains in England and this and that, I will forever despise the bastard, only reason I kept the shirt is because it was the 1913-2006 "Last Hurrah at Highbury" kit, stupid JAR.

phelan 11-15-2010 10:59 PM

still trying to figure out what jersey to buy for next year's kit

cow 11-16-2010 07:13 AM

If things stay the same, maybe Song for me. I want a Rosicky, but dude never gets significant PT.

Red370 11-16-2010 08:00 AM

Wilshere will be my next. No better way to warm up to an English crowd than to have one of their own on my back, being that i'll be attending no less than 10 matches next season at the Emirates :)

its crazy, there are no seats available for less than 80 pounds, and those are nosebleeds. Good thing I got 10k left from my reenlistment bonus, woot.

phelan 11-16-2010 08:19 AM

Honestly, I've never been overwhelmed by the home support. Emirates should be resonating with voices, but it often isn't. I'd try to get some away tickets to some ridiculous place like...oh, I dunno. Anfield, or Old Trafford. The away support for Arsenal is superb.

cow 11-16-2010 09:41 AM

At risk of being redundant, completely agreed.

I'm sick of the only chant we ever hear being, "We're Arsenal FC...."

Every fcuking team has a version of that song-- we're better than that.

With all that said, I'm sure this weekend will be raucous.

"What do we think of Tottenham? 'Chit.' What do we think of 'chit?' Tottenham."

phelan 11-16-2010 11:02 AM

Yeah, it's sad when our standby chant is the "And it's (insert club here), (insert club here) FC, we're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen..." We should be better than that. For example, while I don't necessarily support Liverpool, I still get goosebumps when I watch a Liverpool match and the entire stadium is belting out YNWA.

What do they play during lineups these days? 'Right Here, Right Now', or 'Wonder of You'? I forget haha. I set up FIFA 11 to play Wonder of You just because I like it more

Anyway,

"STAND UP, IF YOU HATE TOTTENHAM!"

Red370 11-16-2010 11:13 AM

I think if I purchase tickets for an away fixture, i'd definitely want to get the match vs. the yids, the N London Derby is always a classic, hotly contested affair, the crowd has to be deafening at those matches.

I'm highly considering buying an Arsenal winter training jacket for those cold days over there, but the damn thing is $150 :(

phelan 11-16-2010 11:31 AM

$150, but i'll be damned if that thing doesn't last a long time.

I got an Arsenal training jacket that was wasting away in the corner of a Nike outlet store. $40, I wear the damn thing everywhere :rofl2:

Oooh, fleece blankie :rofl2:

Red370 11-16-2010 01:11 PM

ooh! that'd be a sweet throw for a couch! im like a kid in a candystore at that website, as a matter of fact, think im gonna go blow $200 on random shit now.

Red370 11-16-2010 01:14 PM

quick question fellas, i've never owned a nike training jacket before, how do they fit? I'm going to buy this one, but im not sure if I should get a Medium or a Large, I had a Large jersey before and it fit me like a dress, i'm 5'10, 170

bwuahahaha! henri lansbury is arsenal's new no. 1!!!!

Quote:

Steele protested he had touched the ball but Christof Virant showed him red and Tosun stepped up to beat Henri Lansbury, who was now forced to play in goal.

Ginczek missed a good chance for 3-0 and Jan Tilman Kirchhoff forced a good reaction save from Lansbury.
:rofl2:

Capello also added that Jack Wilshere had been sent home from training with an injury, and will miss out.
This is why I hate the interlull.

cow 11-16-2010 03:51 PM

I've owned plenty of Nike training jackets & found all fit normally.

Red, I'm the same height & about fifteen pounds heavier (read: out-of-shape). A large will be perfect for you.

probably more goal.com BS, but i've been saying I want this guy for YEARS. He'd be an excellent replacement for the russian.

:icon18: yeah, that one made me LOL a bit. But it couldnt be more true. Only thing i'd say is that hes a bit fragile, and misses a week here and there for various ankle/groin issues. But when hes healthy, hes a terror down the wing.

So I bought a Nike Vapor T90-- best ball I've ever used. It's so light, but man can you hit the chit out of it. I've never played with a ball that flew truer, either.

How much are those? I remember a long time ago, after the 02' WC, Eurosport had an overstock of the Fevernova and had them in the sale section for $60, that ball would fly to Jupiter if you hit it wrong. You could get some crazy spin on that crap too.

Red370 11-17-2010 06:19 AM

another thing I wanted to add, the team i'm coaching had soccer practice last night and i'll tell ya, i've got some mixed feelings about the predators. They fit like a glove and I played a solid 2 hours (combining all the drills n such), no hotspots to report, nothing, they feel effin' great. But one thing i'm definitely going to have to do is adjust my shot with them. They almost put TOO MUCH spin on the ball. Whereas normally with my Puma Kings, I could bend a ball perfectly into the "kill" zone as I like to call it, now when I hit the ball in the same way, it curls sharp and down. So it seems i'm going to have to learn to take less sharp angles and lean back more when I hit it to put it where I need to. Not sure if this is a curse or a advantage...

cow 11-17-2010 07:11 AM

$150 (it's the current EPL ball). I had been playing with a Jabulani & didn't mind it, but now I understand people's gripes about the ball. In retrospect, I was adjusting my shot because the ball was going to spin funny. The T90 stays true when hit straight on & spins when spun. It really was a dream.

Red370 11-17-2010 08:44 AM

I love the way they sort of "thump" off your foot, rather than crack off the foot like a wal mart special adidas/nike ball does, you can definitely tell a pro match ball from a regular run of the mill training ball thats for sure. Unfortunately there arent any good fields here, i'd be too damn afraid of paying $150 for a quality ball, just to watch it get ruined.

cow 11-17-2010 09:25 AM

I play indoor, so the balls after a match are two are all black marked from the rubber under the turf. It's kind of unfortunate busting out a beautiful brand new ball knowing it's going to look Tina Turner in an hour.

phelan 11-17-2010 10:31 AM

hence why i just use the training balls...besides, i'm not a long range goal scoring machine, so i have no need to, i just aim carefully and pick a good angle.

i chuckled to myself this morning b/c i read arseblog before i left

and i was chanting to myself 'arry redknapp hes got a twiiiiiitch

:rofl2:

i gotta say, i am NOT happy that nasri went full time. he put in an absolutely brilliant display, but he better have something left in the tank for the sp*rs!!!

Great to see France back in form, Blanc has the team brimming with confidence it seems. And I agree, hopefully they didnt kill "le petit Zidane" today.

Wow thank ******* god there is something other than Arsenal talk in here.

Anyone see the USA game?
