he scores when he wants. That game should have been 5-1, Newcastle were absolute shyt, Rosicky was a beast, but who misses a sitter like that?

phelan 03-12-2012 05:06 PM

Walcott and Rosicky played very well. Rosicky unlucky, but we should've been fair, NUFC tossed it out when we had a player down.

TV5 GET IN THERE SON!

WTF was that with Krul and RvP lol

cow 03-12-2012 07:27 PM

Krul's hair sucks. RVP probably told him as much.

bigsix 03-13-2012 01:16 AM

For how long do you think Wenger will manage the team (not dependent on trophy success)?

I'd be curious to see how Arsenal will change when we have a new manager. Can you guys see the club using more experienced, older players on the pitch while spending more money (ex. Chelsea)? Is Wenger's footballing philosophy what makes the club what it is?
I've only been a fan for a couple of years, so i'm not too versed on the club's history.
I guess that's the difference b/w Chelsea and Arsenal though... we've kept our Manager for many years, while they change managers frequently.

phelan 03-13-2012 11:03 AM

Arsene will stay as long as he feels he is able to keep the team successful. The board doesn't want to sack him, and I think that in spite of this being the worst Arsenal team in recent (or extended) memory, we're getting results. If we finish on top of Sp*rs, faith will be restored. Even more so if Podolski, Gotze, and Vertonghen make their ways to the Emirates (I have my doubts about Gotze).

Arsene is Arsenal. And his philosophy will carry over for a while, especially if we pick our new manager, whenever that is, from within, i.e. Steve Bould.

You can't compare us to Chelsea because we don't have the money of a Russian oligarch backing us, we do business differently. Heck, we do a lot of things differently, but that's a whole different story.

phelan 03-13-2012 09:07 PM

Yay my new holland jersey came in today

I shoulda got it personalized with RvP :shakes head:

but I don't feel too bad, this is actually gonna be used a lot lol. it looks really good, unless you know what the crest was, it isn't garish like a typical jersey at all!

Jon@AAMComp 03-14-2012 03:54 PM

2-0 Chelsea, 3-3 Agg., but with a win and clean sheet, we're through. Now we need the defense to keep the 'Holy Trinity' out and we're in the last 8 :happydance:

Napoli are still up for it though, we're not in the clear yet...

Jon@AAMComp 03-14-2012 04:00 PM

No sooner did I post...:shakes head:

phelan 03-14-2012 04:05 PM

lol I was about to say :rofl2:

oooh dear, Sturridge off, 'Nando on? Really?

Jon@AAMComp 03-14-2012 04:54 PM

IVANOVIC!! What a game!

5-4 agg

blue660r01 03-14-2012 07:10 PM

Wow so no talk about Bayern absolutely tearing Basel apart after being embarrassed the first leg?

phelan 03-14-2012 07:12 PM

bayern absolutely hammering basel wasn't completely out of the ordinary....gomez' strike rate is ridiculous.

blue660r01 03-14-2012 07:14 PM

Forgot if it isn't EPL it doesn't matter here :ugh:

Seriously! I'm very happy Chelsea was able to pull that off. I really hope the guys can give their all for the rest of the season and Champions League as they did today. (I'm a ManU fan, but have much respect for the guys like Drogba, Terry, etc.)

Also very happy Real Madrid pulled off an easy win vs Moscow.

So you wouldn't agree that Chelsea's win last night was one of the most improbable and memorable victories of the tournament, or in recent memory for that matter? To overturn that deficit against a great Napoli side was incredible, just as it would have been had Arsenal defeated Milan at the Emirates last week. Not the biggest Arsenal supporter, but I would have been the first to congratulate their brilliance had they done the unthinkable, and they came very close. I like to think of this as the premier club competition in the world, and the ties should reflect that. The two English teams provided the most exciting second legs of the tournament in my opinion.

Agreed, Bayern thrashing Basel at home was no more than I expected honestly. They swept Hoffenheim aside in the Bundesliga by 7 goals and conceding just 1. I don't think they were 'embarassed' in the first leg, Basel scored at the death to take a slim 1-0 agg. to Munich. Bayern had many chances to score during the first leg, but quite honestly, the Basel keeper won that game for them. We watched Messi put 5 past Leverkusen and Barcelona advanced 10-2 on agg., so the Bayern scoreline wasn't shocking for me. Basel are good, but they certainly got a reality check against Bayern, as they are incredibly strong at home in this competition. As are Real Madrid, so CSKA didn't have much of a chance against them at the Bernabeu. If anything, we should be talking about how the little Cypriot side called Apoel Nicosia are in the quarter finals after eliminating Olympique Lyonnais.

With that being said, if you'd like to talk Eredivisie, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga, Swiss Super League, or Europa, by all means, lets talk. Speaking of Europa, some nice looking fixtures to be played today-

Schalke/Twente
Besiktas/Atletico Madrid
City/Sporting Lisbon
PSV/Valencia

Quarter final draw is tomorrow. I think this is one of the most diverse elite 8s in recent memory. England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Cypress all represented. Dream ties for me:

Chelsea FC / Olympique de Marseille

(History here: Didier Dechamps old club Chelsea and Drogba's old club Marseille)

FC Barcelona / FC Bayern

(Should just be awesome football to watch, two great sides)

Real Madrid CF / SL Benfica

(Iberian derby)

AC Milan / APOEL FC

(David vs. Goliath. 7 time champs Milan against little APOEL, upset in the making)

Anyway, my $.02

phelan 03-15-2012 10:27 AM

Schalke / Twente is a good match. It's not a very high-profile match, but the one I am really looking forward to is AZ Alkmaar / Udinese at the Friuli. That will be a fun match, Udinese need to turn over a 2-0 aggregate deficit, and Di Natale should be back in the lineup. Hopefully they pick up the pace, they've been horrible to watch recently, VERY slow pace.

I'm still laughing at Marseille going through. Ranieri is still in charge of Inter for now, but the noose tightens ever faster...!

I want APOEL to make a Cinderella run to the finals...but I'm not sure if that's mean or not. They'd get absolutely SHATTERED by Barcelona.

Realistically, we could have Barca / Bayern or El Clasico in the UCL finals. I really, really despise the thought of yet another Clasico. They're not even classic anymore.

batman_4 03-15-2012 12:36 PM

i too dislike the idea of another Clasico but i don't think it will get to that, we all know Madrid doesn't perform vs Barcelona (seems like some sort of physiological barrier in Madrid players).

i think Marseille is going to the team to surprise by continuing in the tourny. between Barca and Bayern i think it will be a good match but Barca will come out on top.

besides that one crap game Milan had.....i feel they will reach the final (Barca v Milan, if they don't meet before). Barcelona will absolutely tear apart any of the teams still in the tourny but Milan proved twice it can stand up to them in the group stages (Barcelona had too many luck goals) vs them.

Jon@AAMComp 03-15-2012 04:14 PM

Hasn't been a good year for Manchester United in Europe. They are out of the Europa League:

Athletic Bilbao 2 Manchester United 1; agg 5-3: match report - Telegraph

phelan 03-15-2012 04:31 PM

Man City is on their way out too. They'll need to score four to advance. 1 pulled back so far from Kun Aguero.

Jon@AAMComp 03-16-2012 08:44 AM

So not exactly my dream draw, but still an interesting one nonetheless:

Apoel Nicosia v Real Madrid

Marseille v Bayern Munich

Benfica v Chelsea

AC Milan v Barcelona

to the semi-finals;

Marseille/Bayern Munich v APOEL Nicosia/Real Madrid

Benfica/Chelsea v AC Milan/Barcelona

Bolton's Fabrice Muamba collapses, carried off; FA Cup game stopped - ESPN

hope he's okay, but this is serious

bigsix 03-18-2012 07:23 AM

only 23 years old... some kind of heart attack or failure.

Red370 03-18-2012 03:30 PM

good article, and I couldnt agree more. Kos has been a brick wall at the back this year, its ridiculous how fast the guy is and how he seems to win every ball in the air, even against players that are damn near a foot taller than him.

shadoquad 03-21-2012 03:06 PM

Last I heard (this morning), Muamba is steadily improving.

I'm a little surprised to find this thread non-busy today, what with the Messi, uh, scoring a hat trick and breaking records.

phelan 03-21-2012 03:43 PM

Because if it's not Premier League, we don't give a ****

Seriously, what is there to say about him? Other than he's still only 24 years old.

And he broke Barca's goal scoring record.

NOBODY WILL EVER TOUCH THAT GOAL RECORD AGAIN.

Messi: the one player in the world who looks like he's playing FIFA 12 on amateur on the pitch.

Other news: Muamba dead for 78 minutes, but came back to life and is fine. Brilliant news.

Edit news: UGLY game. UGLY UGLY UGLY.

One-nil to the Arsenal still.

I understand the game is a taxing cardiovascular endurance trial, but that Indian player came in as a sub. And even then, these guys are in peak physical condition. They are strong young men. The fact that the Bolton player has a chance at survival is likely due to his youth and fitness level.
