Beauty Dish up high on a mini-boom, camera left. Big Soft Box just barely right of camera. White Reflector to the left, about chest level, tilted up slightly.

One thing I'm really happy about with what I shot last night is that I stopped it down quite a bit. I shot everything at f/11 and got the detail I was looking for.
Just because my lens goes as wide as f/1.4, that doesn't mean that's where I should be all the time

Right on the f-stop -- wide open = shallow depth of field.

I usually try to stay between 5.6 to f/8. A lot of lenses have diffraction around f/11 or slower.

That shot looks good as far as lighting and exposure, but it needs some sharpening and I'm not too sure how I feel about how tight the crop is.

That reflection above her eye is really distracting, too.

Yeah, that reflection was a pain in my butt. I kept moving myself around to make it go away... In hindsight, guess I should have moved the light a little more to my right or had the model turn away from it a little bit. The glasses kept sliding off her nose. It was really humid that night! This was the best of them from that shot. The LCD on the camera is no match for your monitor when it comes to picking out details!

I've been working in the 5.6 to 8 range, but haven't been getting the detail I was looking for. I did turn the sharpening up in Lightroom (around +30) but I am always afraid to go too far with that.

Back to the drawing board to practice some more.

Here's some 4th of July pictures from around Silver Lake in S.Everett, Wa where I live:

One half of a married couple I see all the time, they like to fish for trout in Silver Lake, haven't yet caught it on camera!

Haven't quite got the knack for taking shots at high noon...

Here's the view from my deck of my neighbors blowing up thousands of dollars, epic fail on one of the mortar shots!
