Sounds like you're letting it sit in Neutral for too long. Anytime you pause between gears SRM preps at a nice "halfway" point since it doesn't know if you're going up or down. A nice, smooth motion keeps it in check. From my understanding, if SRM has a true issue, you will see it either 1. All the time in every gear change, or 2. Never, because it will just not function.
