Interesting facts you should know before buying a 2009:
My car is a 2009 fully loaded sport touring, 6MT with 11,500mi

Kelly Blue Book value for Private Party sale:
Excellent: $34,525
Good: $32,925
Fair: $30,425

For Trade-In value:
Excellent: $30,650
Good: $29,250
Fair: $26,750

The interesting figure is the Private Party Excellent/Good condition values. With 11,500mi, it's really maintained value.
Make sure your negotiation on the new 2009 is respective of these values.
This makes me feel even better about my preowned 2009 Touring/Sport/Navigation I picked up with 3800 miles for $33,700!

I say get a 2009 if you can negotiate a sweet deal on the package you want. Otherwise, wait for the right car to arrive from Japan.
The 2010 has an improved navigation/stereo interface if that sort of thing is a deciding factor for you.

Thanks -

LOL - killer - waiting? just wanted to be certain that there wasn't a serious flaw with the 2009 - googled and came up empty so I knew you guys would know -

Seriously one dealer in the small town of Anderson SC has 5 - 09's on their lot -

Have found 3 yellows - unfortunately all are AT - that's a deal breaker - even our four door family sedan is MT and that took 2 hours of disagreement with salesman that was determined to change us to AT.

yeah, no difference at all as far as reliability between models, they all rock! Go to the dealership and get the paperwork done on one of them bad boys for invoice or below

KBB is a good reference point, but it is definitely marked up. I'd also check Edmunds to see what people are actually paying.

Even better, see if you can get ahold of the Black Book, which lists the wholesale value of the car. It is generally several grand less than invoice. Nothin deflates a salesperson like a consumer armed with knowledge about the actual value of the car (they usually groan and mutter to themselves bitterly if you walk in with the black book )

Dealers should be hungry to unload the 09's which are losing value every day, especially as we approach October -- play hardball, and get exactly what you want.

And remember -- just as the salesperson's job is to get the best deal s/he can, your job is to look out solely for yourself. Don't expect the dealer to be concerned about your finances -- they just want to make a buck and you just want to save a buck.

In other words, don't even bother haggling over MSRP -- get it at or below invoice, keeping in mind mileage and model year. They will still make a nice fat profit off of you even if they agree to a so-called "loser deal" for them -- its all a bunch of BS.

If they won't work out a deal with you that you are happy with, walk out and go elsewhere. They'll probably call you in a day or so to renegotiate.

It's not a bunch of bs. So far from the truth. Dealers just like any other business can lose money easily..

Yeah, well that's not for the consumer to worry about. If the salesperson doesn't like the offer s/he can choose not to sell and sit on the car.

If you walk in determined to help the dealer make a profit, you are going to get taken advantage of.

Holdbacks, incentives, trading cars from lot-to-lot (rather than actually putting up money for it), depreciation on the car, tons of mark up over the wholesale value, etc.

Even if there was an honest to God loss on a particular car (frankly, unlikely), then there may be other incentives to make the sale like getting rid of a car to free up space in the inventory for a new one, because sitting on it longer will just result in it being even harder to sell or having to make even less on the car as it slowly depreciates to get rid of it later.

These aren't diamonds or rare pieces of art they are cars -- and with the exception of the odd "collector's car", they are never worth what you paid for it and lose value every day.

Again, the dealer can say, "Sorry, no sale" if the deal really is going to result in them taking a loss. Guess what, it probably won't if they agree to it.

Generally you're just haggling over how much of profit they will make, not whether they will make a profit.

They are not obligated to sell and you are not obligated to buy -- THAT is the free market.

ARGGH - I had forgotten how much I dislike buying cars - here is my first quote on MT6 touring with sport... I of course declined...

Marie,

Good afternoon. My name is CC, Sales Manager with ??? Nissan of ???, and resident of ???. I received your inquiry about the 2009 Nissan 370Z Touring with Sport pkg that I have in stock. It has a MSRP of $38810.00. The deal that I will give you is this: $29990.00!!!!!! This offer is only valid thru July 6th because you lose $500.00 Holiday Bonus Cash after the 6th. This is a ridiculously low price on this car and I guarantee that no other dealer will sell it at that price. This is lower than the advertised price and lower than the price I have on the decal on the side. Also, at this price, I can not even pay a sales commission, so you get to deal direct with me. NO SALESMAN!!! That excites alot of people to know that they are dealing direct with the Executive Manager.

There are of corse a few other perks that will come with your purchase. Being that I live in Seneca, all service needs come with free pick up and delivery to you, and you are provided a free loaner car for as long as you own the car. At this price, I would not hessitate. Please call me and let me know when you plan on coming in and taking delivery of the 370Z Sport Touring. I hope to hear from you soon.

Reguards,

CC

Yeah, that's actually a pretty good deal. Call back and ask them to make it 29K even and you'll take it (they'll probably counter with 29.5 or so).

A dealer tried to sell me the same set of options on a '09 with a 5K miles on it for nearly 40K.

How many miles? If low, check it out and if it looks good, jump on it.

That said, that MSRP is BS -- it's a year old car. Even if it has 0 miles on it, it's last year's model, and in a few months it will be a TWO year old car.

I don't know what's up with that sales pitch, but they seem motivated to get rid of it -- probably need to clear out the inventory and they are close to getting some sort of big bonus if they unload one more car. Make sure the carfax is clean and check it over with a fine tooth comb.

29K give or take is reasonable if it has low mileage -- good luck!
