Think of it this way, you're driving your 6 mt trans car hard around a curvy track. You reach down to change gears and wtf, the shifters not there, it moved 4 inches to the right. 6 seconds later you gotta shift again, wtf it's not there again, it moved 3 inches up and to the left......you get the message.
Agreed. Hence, my comment about wishing the paddle shifters rotated with the steering wheel.

Also, as an aside, the gears in the AT can be changed with the console shifter itself (forward to go up, backward to go down), which is no more difficult than changing gears with a MT.

it took me all of 2 days of driving the **** out of my 7at to get used to where the paddles were . i can get buck sideways in 2nd gear let go with my right hand upshift into 3rd ( all while the car shifts so fast i never stop spinning and tries to change direction like a manual would ) and continue to smolder tires in 3rd up to the limiter . remove my right hand from the wheel again and slide away into 4th as she shift nice , hard and fast into 4th . i know these are not dsg gear boxes but if you know how to drive a car and drive a car hard . nissan did a very good job with this trans . btw once in manual mode at 10mph or more the tq locks so its just like having the clutch out . to my understanding it only does this in manual mode . if you have a 7at you will notice that once your rolling there is no play in the rpms on an off throttle it stays at that dead set rpm .. i say bravo to nissan for this trans . ive tracked cars all my life and i thought for sure id hate it . on the test ride when i broke sideways in second tapped the paddle and it did what i told it to when i told it to i was amazed . when i take off in first spinning i can spin into 3rd all day 4th if im a real jack *** and you cant tell where the car shifted gears by the marks it shifts so fast . would i rather it be a dsg yes but it was enough to win me over . also as far as you track guys go on your downshifts try feeding it a little gas as you choose a lower gear under breaking . nissan has designed a nice little feature that allows you to do this smoothly without powering into corners on the breaks . it will allow you to down shift just as smooth as a heal toe shift . i dont know how it does it maybe just drops vaacuume to make the downshifts on hard breaking smooth as butter .

I love the paddles. I used to use the shift knob a lot. Now I only use the paddles. However, after two years of ownership, I have just chilled on drive every now and then. Its not too bad.

I've driven the 7AT and the paddles are great, but my question is, how often do you guys actually shift gears using them? I had a Maxima with paddles and while they weren't quite as quick, they were pretty dang good, but after awhile I just stopped using them. It seemed senseless while driving around town. So really, how often do you use them?

every day. i only use drive to go about in parking lots, starting from a stop since 1-2 is smoother in D at low speeds, or when cruising at 80 on the freeway since i think it gets better mpg that way.

I test drove a '14 with paddle shifters (while my Z was getting oil changed) and IT WAS AWESOME! Lol. After I got used to it anyways. I would def consider it if I had it to do over.

This rough 1st 2nd really bothers sports car owners? The next gen 7at won't be aggressive enough because people keep mentioning the rough 2 gears. I like that jerk feeling in conjunction with a burst of torque. Reminds me I'm driving a something emotional & powerful.
