I'm always up for a good challenge, but there was no reason for the level he has brought it to.

Absolutely not. There's never a reason for threats towards someone's family. Are you local to him? He's made several comments about always carrying a gun.

I'm 99% sure he's just running his mouth, but he has substantial mental issues and is armed. I would probably forward the email to the appropriate authorities if he's threatening you and your family. You can't be too careful protecting your family.
