This makes me happy I did not go 135i, I saw it launch and fell in love, but that was before the Z came rushing up and passing it. I test drove the Z one afternoon during lunch and I almost walked out that day with it, just the wrong color.

I didn't say I'd own it. I would've leased it just for the duration of warranty. But yeah, reliability of german cars has just gone down the crapper. Heck, Mercedes ranks even below GM in reliability :S

Well I wouldn't go as far as saying german cars have gone down the crapper, that's a little harsh. I mean BMW isn't made to be a track car and everyone knows that. If you want a great luxury car that turns on a dime and will give you trouble free years as long as you don't abuse it, then you get a BMW. My mom had an E46 330ci convertible and that thing rocked for the street, but I would never take it on the track. Now she has a 335i convertible and it's even more enjoyable to drive. Mercedes however, I can't say the same for. They're quality and reliability have been pretty bad for the last 10 years or so and they love to make innovative stuff that's way to pricey and loves to break. But look at porsche, they're one of the last (if not the last) non-supercar company that has an entire line up of cars that are built for the street and the track but is still made for every day luxury. I wouldn't count out those germans just yet...

I was disappointed with the review. They just spent 14 minutes doing drifting in the rain and got no real results in the end. Then he downplayed it pretty badly and ended it abruptly when the Z killed the Z4 on the track. He had NO reason to pick the BMW this time around and frankly his reviews have been less than objective lately since he tries to make them so absurd to try and be funny. The humor is getting really repetitive too.

Is it me...or was his pick of the BMW sarcastic? Even the crowd laughed. Sounds to me like he picked the 370z...just based on that comment.

Tell that to the owners of brand new 335i whose car stalls cuz their fuel pump fails. And based on what i read, the problem plauges not just 07 or 08 but even 09 model years. 3 years and bmw still can't make a fuel pump that works. Apparently even the redesigned upgrade are still prone to failure. Really inexcusable for such an expensive car. And it has nothing to do with abuse or track use either.

BMWs are good as lease cars, just for fun and showing off. But only a lunatic would really own one beyond the warranty expiration.

I test drove a 335i coupe with stick shift. It was lots of fun. I have to say the engine smoothness and quiteness, low end torque, and the smooth linear clutch and smooth transmisssion shifting were really pleasurable, quite a notch better than the Z. But the inability to cheaply tune them for track use and the horror stories I read about their reliability turned me to the Z.

I haven't read up too much about tuning the 335 but it can't see how it would be a nightmare to tune being already TT'd and a monster of a motor. But you did say for the TRACK, which it was never made for.

The cayenne yes I have to admit it's a quick SUV, but it's still a big ol' SUV. I don't really know what they were thinking when they made that besides trying to cash in on the US market for a novelty type of car. Not one of my favorites but then again there's never been a car manufacturer that hasn't made some poor model choices along the way.

And the fuel pump issue, hmm I have to research that. I haven't read up a lot about the comments people make toward the car besides initial testing from car magazines etc and my own driving experiences with the car. I do remember them saying something about the overheating issue due to the lack of an oil cooler (just like the Z), but I believe they fixed that for the new model year and retro fitted all previous years with the coolers.

And as far as leasing it and not owning it, I'm not too sure I agree with you on that one but to each his own. I've had experiences with a late model 840ci, two 7 series, and two 3 series and none of them gave us any trouble. And the cars were driven everyday with a decent amount of miles on them. Needless to say they weren't beaten on by any means so I'm sure there were a few problems I potentially avoided by not participating in aggressive street driving with any of them (except the new 335 i'll flog on every once in a while but no problems yet knock on wood).

Check out the BMW forums. The failing fuel pump is a fairly common problem on the new 335/135is...along with a handful of other problems.

Thats exactly how I saw it. He seemed reluctant to say anything good about the 370 and when he did he made it sound like he had to say it, like it was in the script.
