A properly designed oil cooling system will have a thermo plate to limit flow to the radiator until temp gets close to operating level - ie, it won't make much difference in warm-up time.

So the question is actually "Why doesn't my oil temp gauge work?", right?

In looking at the data and doing some quick math, here is an average temp increase from ambient temp: • Engine coolant temp increases about 32F/min (18C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM (until the thermostat start to open, then it levels off) • Engine oil temp increases about 14F/min (8C/min) under light load < 3500 RPM (without factory oil cooler) Roughly right, on a 80F morning, it should take about 4-5 minutes (( 140-80) / 14) before the oil temp gauge starts to move. And at a 60F morning, ((140-60)/14) it should take about 5-6 minutes for the gauge to move. Is this accurate to what you have seen? |

![]() ![]() The engine is not in a car btw folks. It's on a stand running G37 wiring communicating with Z ecu and gauges. Since I barely have a loads on this it does take a loooong time for oil temps to register in the tripple meter while is inside a garage. Thank again for the input. ![]() |

I never drive my car in the winter.
Spring and summer temps I stick by this rule: Start car, let it run for one min, drive under 2500 rpm until car warms up and I'm good to go. Really, sitting there idling does no good, it's better to slowly drive your car until it gets to temps.

I wait for the initial drop from ~1500rpm to ~1200rpm and then try to keep it under ~4000 until oil temp shows 150*. Don't know if that's good, bad, or indifferent but that's what I do...lol.
