My Z has 58k on it, and I've had very few issues. The only significant problem I had was when the clutch master & slave cylinders crapped out on me when I was four hours from home. (Something a couple people have had happen on here.) For me it was under warranty (100k mile extra warranty) so it didn't cost me anything. The extra warranty for me was only $5/month, so I'd consider that if you're looking at a pre-owned one. You never know what the oaf did to it before you bought it.
Otherwise, I've only done regular maintenance. VQs are pretty bulletproof. I've had no oil consumption issues. That being said, you're going to pay more for regular maintenance than you will with, say, a Hyundai Elantra, which is great motivation to learn how to DIY. And yeah, once you start modding you may have to take another job. It's addictive.
