I thought I was the only one. I had a local guy tell me about how much faster he is than anyone, then I asked what his times were at any of our local tracks. He said the famous words you quoted above.

How the hell can you know if you're fast if you have no logical benchmark

Don't race him on any public road...ever. Resist the temptation. Encourage track use. Always.

Don't even bother encouraging track use....what is even the point of going to a track to settle a senseless challenge that doesn't amount to jack-squat in the greater scheme of life? Encourage instead the resistence of an obvious infantile urge...

I'm sorry but I think it's unrealistic to think certain people will just become mature overnight, especially young testosterone filled ones. If you can change the attitude of just one pseudo-street racer to take it off the streets and on to the track, you've done a good thing. Maybe even saved a life.
