Think of it this way...they are basically your 'servant' for a half-hour or more. How would you feel after an hour of serving someone and getting payed $5 total for it. A 15%-20% tip really isn't that much. I know a lot of people that run restaurants. Always be nice to people the bring or cook your food...ALWAYS!
Not true. There are some states where waiters/waitresses are paid minimum including tips. However, there are some states that do pay below minimum.

..not in NY and not in a lot of states. I few people I know earn about $2.50 or less, plus tips. The problem is, it's not always consistent and you don't get paid much on slow days.

Never thought about tipping a service advisor. I have a good one that has been there for many years and saved me money. When I get my new car in, I will start bringing donuts.

OP, there is no need to tip the advisor. It might even be insulting because some might consider themself as more white collar. I'd tip the tech actually working on the car if they did a really good job. Buy the service advisor guys donuts or something if they really helped you out.
Very well Put- thanks for sharing this comment

I give the owner of my dealer here a nice bottle of wine and tip the tech. I cannot say enough about my dealer. The owner started as mech many many years ago on Nissan's. Family place great people and atmosphere. Unlike any dealer I had in the US ever. No comparison.

No, the most I will do is bring them business.
My service adviser cuts me deals and helps me out. Brought my GF Z in (out of warranty), he threw out the standard $99 charge just to look at the car. I recommend people to see him as long as he continues to help and provide good service. The guys who work on my car(s) will get helped out extra. From maybe a little cash to bringing them side business.

When I take my 370 or Juke to the dealer, I bring donuts. Seriously. The staff at Maita Nissan are mostly former Datsun guys, many of them race and they go out of their way to help out and take care of their customers. Strange, I know, but they are highly professional.

I do the same, coffee and donuts. I'll go out of my way to make sure the techs (the people who do the work) receive it because the bastard sales guys will take it all if you leave the stuff with the service advisor.

I know from working in similar business, a simple coffee goes a long way.

No, I do not tip my service adviser. However if he goes to bat for me on anything I will make sure that his name is mentioned to the right people.

Yeah if they do a good job I'll fill out those service cards/participate in those customer satisfaction surveys you get sometimes. I don't tip though that's crazy talk.

I don't tip. They constantly try to take more money, fix what ain't broke, and nickle and dime me to death.

Screw them.

I am nice, I never set a time table for minor services, and I treat them with respect, but that is as far as it goes

I don't tip at the dealership

When I take my car to an independent garage for work (I go to an Import performance shop more than the dealership) I tip the guys working on my car. They often refuse but I force them to take it!

Or if I got to a wheel shop fore tires to be changed, I'll tip those guys

Actually...at the dealership, only person I tip is the Curtesy van driver if they drop me off somewhere if I am not waiting for my car
