so for fresh news...hummmm... i got the cupmout holder replacement coming to me later in the week along with a 3ft 3.5mm cord for my tascam portable digital recorder + gopro. (swivel wasnt horizontal due to detents). i put a little piece of e-tape between the arm and holder area on the bottom to eliminate all noise. i can go over bumps with the tascam not picking up any rattles from the holder.

if anyone has a tascam digital recorder handy, i highly recommend using that as the mic and preamp. just set the mic level using the display (mine is set at 4 on the dial), and turn up the output level until the gopro clips on the loudest passage. in my case my gopro started clipping at 14, so using 12 clicks from zero output level. this is by far the best sound. i can choose to just stand-by in record mode (battery lasts forever) on the tascam or actually record so i have real audio + audio going to the gopro (with 2000mAh eneloops it can run 5-6hrs no issue at 320bps MP3).

oh yah, i also got the windcutter 'stormwatcher' deadcat over the weekend and tried it on my real sony mic for gopro. worked great! was going 60mph with driver side window down, no wind noise saturation.

other then that i think i might swap out my stereo speakers this summer.
So if you record from the Tascam and the GoPro, do you just use the GoPro audio to sync the Tascam audio? Also can you run the Tascam in the cabin and an external mic placed near the exhaust?

I can take video and pictures no problem, the whole audio recording and syncing thing has me

i can use the gopro audio if it's coming from the tascam recorder (using the mics and preamp on the tascam). the audio has hiss and minor high pitched noise, but the audio quality is decent enough where i can just EQ the 16kHz down a little bit and use it. it's the cleanest i can get using the gopro's audio tracks.

if i want to use cleaner audio, i would use the mp3 file recorded on the Tascam and use my LogicAudio software (or garageband can do the same) and trim the audio where you want to use for the vid clips. there' no timecode so i have to manually sync it using audio references such as turn signal click or engine rpm, or if you want, snap your fingers or clap to aid in your manual syncing. you can move the audio track left/right with your curser in iMovie to time it just right.

for the audio source i just place the tascam in the cupholder area. i chose this location because it is closest to my listening plane inside the cabin. i can also talk normally while driving and my voice is recorded very audibly as if i had a lapel mic. this is where the cupholder mount comes in handy.

i can pickup plenty of nice exhaust audio and in-cabin audio including music playing off my Z's stereo. the music clarity is to the point it almost sounds like i added it in post-production.

btw, im using an older tascam model called D7. it was like $250 or something a yr or so ago.

Ok, I think I'm getting it. I'll look into the Tascam, or a Zoom and re-read your experimentation posts

yah, there's ones with a built-in speaker which would be very handy to use for finding the track you want to use with your video clips. if i was to rebuy i would look at something like that.

here's a list of major brand/popular recorders available.

You're quick! I was going to ask you what you think of the Zoom H1 H1 | ZOOM it looks like it would work nicely on the top of my 7D as well, maybe too low end to do what we are after with the GoPro?

yah, i want to have the hatch as winter beater + local store beater...

1. Don't test drive a Golf R. It's too expensive and will ruin you on GTI's

2. Fiord is coming out with the Focus ST this summer. Interesting option to check out imo

3. I heard a rumor that the MS3 is getting changes for the 2013 model. Don't know what yet.

hahaha. yah, great advice, thanks. oh yah, the ST... im not a ford guy at all and i have this partially crazy oldman ford-freak neighbor a coupld doors down so i dont want to get it and have him get all wierd on my driveway...

i am also tuning-in to the changes mazda brings to the 3. i think im going to kick myself getting the ugly MS3 after seeing the more normal-looking next gen car. so i dont want to rush buying a hatch yet.

and at the end of the day if someone is willing to give me a super deal on a xB, i might take that.

zoom makes decent budget products and i think it will do fine with the gopro's. zoom uses cheap chrystals where it can't keep a constant time like the tascams, yamaha's, sony's. ive read about people using their recorders and having sync issues for long documentaries, etc. if it's short clips composed of many short takes, the zoom will do just fine.

i use tascam as that's wat ive been using the last 25+ yrs with success.

Good info. I always thought Tascam and Zoom were equal. Apparently not. I'll do more checking on the links you provided before I pull the trigger.

Off topic, but I saw this at a client site yesterday. It was much lower at first but I spazzed when I was trying to get my Droid into camera mode.

I gotta be honest: I can't stand the smiley grill on the MS3. I'll never get one while they look like that.
