I wonder if the car shuts down since the key needs to be physically inside the car for it to go into "drive". It can sense that they key is no longer inside the car I suppose. Probably the would be thief wouldn't get very far. You can easily test this theory by starting up the car and placing the key in the house and to try driving off without the key with you.
