Default Surfdog's 09 journal

The motor is already out. Now I'm planning how to build.

I'm thinking
forged oil pump gears
Good crank and rods and pistons
Phunks pan
400 hp kit (recycled)
Bugger throttle bodies
Add an acusump to my stillen cooler.
Fluid harmonic dampener (to help with the JWT light flywheel)

I'm up for recommendations on a good 4000 dollar street (occasional track) build.

1st question. Are your heads from this motor any good? If so. You can get a built short block. There have been a couple of them posted on the forum. Save a couple of bucks. If not, then long block. Parts for a built motor. Billet crank, rods, pistons, ATI dampener is what I would start with. Decide on what displacement you want to run too if you go this route. Think you could get close to 400hp with cubic inches.

I'm in progress assessing the damage. Stay tuned. I'm exited to tap into the wisdom here on the forum to build a cool motor.

I suspect my heads are okay but it's hard to say before I get the motor apart.

I suspect that you may have a damage chamber in a head with a rod looking like that.

I would not chance it, aluminum heads are easily damaged! Long block or ls swap. I have driven a 240 with a v8 and it's pretty dang awesome!

The only problem with doing a LS swap. Is now you have 2 project cars going on at the same time. could get confusing.

Lol my brother has that problem and it has taken him years to complete one of his projects. Well he is not done yet with his 69 ss camaro and I'm picking up an engine for 72 chevelle next weekend so that might not be a good idea lol!

Yeah in going to buy a build long block I think and run on that. It should be good for a mostly DD.

What do you think about 11/1 compression for a street car.

That's what the stock N/A Z 3.7 is. 11 to 1. Most built FI Z blocks are 10 to1 to 9 to 1.

Well I pieced together a long block
Z1 stage 2 short and IPP stage 2 heads with the JWT exhaust cams

I'll be swapping out all the timing chains gaskets etc and upgrading the failed (culprit) oil gasket to a metallic with better fasteners

Upgraded to Nismo oil pump

Z1 throttle bodies

The motor should come back together pretty stout but I'll still limit to 7800 RPM just to be conservative

I'll recycle my Z1 400 ho kit but am getting a new plenum (mine is full of shrapnel)

I'm hoping to make this mess an opportunity for a moderate upgrade.

The throttle bodies make 10 ish hp?
The JWT cams 25 ft lbs and 10 ish hp
The fresh motor ???? Better compression perhaps but my motor was pretty strong befor it popped so who knows. The head was a bit leaky so who knows.

...no dry sump . That's going into the racecar but I will Acusump!! (Bought one from a forum guy)

Should be a cool motor when I'm done.

Wink

Don't take any short cuts when building the motor. If something is not right, fix it. It's not good when you know you did something that you're not suppose to do.

I verified with IPP that they are putting the gen 2 JWT exhaust cams on my heads.

They also told me that my cores are no good because i stripped down the heads too much ( I guess you are supposed to leave the intake cams and phasers alone when tearing everything down...oops)

so with the exception of having to pay a core charge, I'm in pretty good shape.

Z1 shipped my bottom end and all the extras today (z1 clutch, billet oil gears, stage 2 long block etc) today so I'll just be waiting for the heads and I'm back in business,,

It will be cool to see if a stage 2 NA built motor with JWT cams makes any dyno gains. Surely it must!!!! lol

It seems like a long time I've been without my Z!!!!
