I got a couple of scopes with different reticles. Fine hair, heavy duplex, BDC, mil-dot, etc. Like what was said about the BDC reticles by VABAM. They are matched to a bullet style, weight, and velocity. Change one of the parameters, and then it's no longer useful. Your bullet drops WILL be different. Lately, I've flavoring the mil-dots with a FFP scope.

Vortex makes a good scope. Primary Arms looks to be a rebranded chinese scopes.

The only real opinion I have is about the reticle. I tend to stay away from BDC (Bullet Drop Compensated) reticles. Most of the time, when you read the fine print on BDC reticles they only work with a specific weight bullet going a specific velocity. I'm guessing since your looking at getting an AR/5.56 reticle this optic is meant for an AR-15 style rifle or something similar. TBH IMO you don't need a BDC for AR-15s, especially if you are shooting less than 300 yards. A good 50 yard zero and you should be able to hit anything within +/- 3 inches out to about 285 yards IIRC, 250 realistically. At 300 yards its about - 4-5 inches depending on the load out of 16" barrel. Check out this webs site for visual aids: Arma Dynamics Zero Considerations

The other reason I tend to stay away from BCDs is more practical. A BCD really locks down a purpose/round for a particular optic. I rather have a good MOA or MILRAD reticle and have an optic I can use on any rifle/round I choose.

Just my

While most folks won't shoot much past 200-300 yards, I've shot an AR platform gun out to 500 yards while on active duty. What I've heard is that one should plan to spend a $$ amount equal to what you spent on the rifle. Low end build, low end scope; high end build, high end scope. There are several good scopes out there, what you get will depend on budget and the range you intend to use your rifle. For example: my 500 yard rifle has a real old Bushnell 3x9 scope (I really need to update it ) but I can consistently put .308 rounds in a 4" group at 500 yards. Could the group be tighter? Sure, but if I'm hitting center mass on a torso, how accurate do I really need to be? 165 gr hollow point will pretty well ruin someone's day. My Mini 14 uses iron sights and I dialed it in for a 150 yd zero, 300 blackout has a scope set for 100 yds and the 6.8 is my 200-300 yd weapon. Oh and the .30-06 is my reach out and touch someone at 1000 yds...

Point is, what range to you expect to use the rifle and how often. TBH, there is no sense in buying a really high end scope to shoot once in a blue moon. IMHO, learn to shoot over iron sights before putting a scope on.... if you can't shoot over iron sights, you won't be able to shoot with a scope...

This all day long. I used to tell hunters that were just starting or did want spend a lit of money to just buy a Bushnell Trophy 3x9, it's a decent piece of glass and if you brake it, it comes with a free lifetime warranty. If you decide you want to move up from there then you are not out a lot of money.

Tier 1 scopes are $3,300 and up. You have to look though a Tier 1 to see the difference. This is two of the scopes I'm looking at for my next rilfe.

What's the rifle? Those are some serious scopes.

I'm going to put together a 6.5 Creedmore at some point.

Your posts has gotten me looking at scopes again. Been meaning to replace most of my scopes. All of my current scopes are running MILRAD based reticles and I want to switch to all MOA. I have been trying use MIL and it has been an up hill battle. I keep on defaulting to yards/inches/MOA so I'm not fighting it anymore. That means I'll be off loading 3 of my scopes when I get back stateside.

Nightforce has 2 new scopes that have peaked my interest. Basically they are the same scope, 1-8x24mm F1 except one is 30mm tube and the other is 34mm.
NX8 1-8x24mm F1 (30mm)
ATACR 1-8x24mm F1 (34mm)
I'm looking at the NX8 1-8x24mm F1 with the FC-MOA reticle as an optic for my EBR build.

So does that make an ACOG a Tier 2 scope? During the second battle of Fallujah, Marines took out targets at 800M and beyond (which is past the stated accurate distance for the platform) with the original "donut of death" sight picture (since changed in milspec).

Tier 3.

You ever look though a high end Schmidt & Bender PM II, Valdada IOR, Nightforce, Vortex, US Optics. They all have one thing in common. Either US or German made glass.

And I DIDN'T say ANYTHING about marksmanship either.

Nope, I've never been that far up the scale. I've drooled over some Gen 3 night vision, but could never justify it.

If I ever went for the sub 0.5 MOA match M1A I might consider a premium scope, but as it is I can't justify the cost.
