454 Casull in a Taurus? If you were going to go that route, I'd go with a Ruger Super Blackhawk instead. Ruger's been building rock solid 'thumb busters' for decades. :)

Nice. I've read lots of good things about the Lapua, it does tend to be a bit pricey on the factory ammo side. I'd love to have a good bolt gun in 338 Lapua or 50 BMG; it's just hard to find places to shoot them here in Kansas. Not many ranges with a mile of clear space, especially near the city. :eekdance:

I hear ya on the range part lol my grandfathers has 80 acres that we hunt/shoot/sight guns in on and the portion im shooting this at, is around 490-500 yards ( buddy did a range find on it)

its also pretty heavy ( 18 pounds with the scope exc)

its hard for me to find any LEFT handed guns anywhere lol and the ones I do find I want, are in right, and I have to " special order " them upping the price lol

Going indoors tomorrow. Snow forcasted. Gonna sight in my KPOS pistol carbine conversion. Inside of it is a Glock 17. My 700 Remy is at the gunsmith being modded and massaged. Just got a CSA VZ58 and I'm pimping it out. Changed the furniture, waiting on a brake and butt stock and more mags. Btw, it eats 7.62x39. And....I have a new semi .308 "Modern Hunter" being made. Should be ready in February.

The ammo safe is down to under 5k rounds.....gotta stock up!

6MT 11-26-2014 08:45 PM

Ooooo. I got some new toys!

First is a FAB Defense KPOS pistol carbine conversion. With a Glock 17 inserted inside, I now shoot this out to 100 yards.

http://i.imgur.com/6a0UXkv.jpg

Second is a CSA VZ58 in 7.62x39 with FAB Defense furniture and shock absorbing butt-stock. The red dot is a Bushnell TRS25. The only thing left to add is the muzzle brake which is coming from Israel.

http://i.imgur.com/MCuXDY7.jpg

....I have a semi-auto "modern hunter" being made. Chambered in .308 and has the looks of an AR. Pics will follow when it's done in February. The Remy 700P is being worked on....bedding, new bottom metal with drop mags, muzzle brake, and truing.

Still going to the range although the outdoor range is hard when it's cold. More updates to follow.

Edit: Almost forgot the commie rifles. A black Russian SKS clothed in ATI and a Chinese SKS original. Both in 7.62x39.

Does that require a stamp / NFA hassles? That's pretty slick and I've got extra Glocks.

6MT 11-27-2014 02:26 PM

I'm not sure what you mean by "stamp". No hassles from anyone, except of course our inept firearms laws. It's restricted, yes. But other than that, you buys it and you use it....

They make them for other pistols too.

Uh...assuming that you are in the USA portion of ITU Zone 2, a pistol conversion with a stock and a foregrip is an SBR and therefore a Title II weapon under the GCA and regulated by the NFA. If you're caught in possession of that assembled weapon without a tax stamp ($200), it's a sure ticket to a Federal courtroom, and that assumes that an SBR is legal in your state and that you aren't therefore violating state law too.

Since you're not sure what Chuck33079 meant by "stamp", it's a safe bet you either aren't in the USA, or you aren't familiar with US firearms laws under the NFA. I wouldn't take it out to the range just yet.

I was recently given an old (not sure how old but at least 45 yo) and non-functioning Springfield 187H semi-auto .22 rifle (tube feed). I was able to find an exploded diagram and was able to disassemble it just enough to figure out that the firing pin is broken.

During my web search I could not find a manual for this rifle. :( Does anyone know where I can get a manual with disassembly/reassembly procedures? I'd like to tear it down, clean it up, replace the pin (Numrich has them), and see how it fires but there are a LOT of small parts and I'd like to have some idea what I'm doing before I take it apart.

TIA for any help.

I couldn't find anything but I emailed a family friend who has the knack for finding old firearm stuff.

Edit: I didn't watch them but some Youtube vids came up in my search. They might helpful.

However, I did find this though. It's the biggest collection of manuals and diagrams for firearms and firearms accessories I've seen.

Have you tried local gun shows? The ones around here there's always a sizeable contingent of old-timers who could probably show you how to break that down and reassemble it.

Thanks!

I found out that the rifle (or same basic design) was also sold as Savage 187E, 187H, 188H, 87H, 87KE, 87E, 87KH, 6E, 6H, 6DL and Stevens 87A. Didn't find this out until about 0100 last night and couldn't hold my eyes open long enough to pursue. Will be doing that today.
Some models allow the bolt to be locked forward for single-shot use with shorts but mine doesn't do that. :(

I looked at several of the Youtube vids that were very helpful as far as they went but I didn't see anything that went beyond removing the bolt/hammer and the feeder. Youtube is where I first learned that the rifle was sold by more than one manufacturer. I need to go back and search for some of the model numbers I discovered last night.

The Steve's Pages site looks like a great resource. Bookmarked for a look later today.

I live in a small town where The Event of this year was a Salt-N-Pepa concert. Not many gun shows here. :) But that's a great idea. I'll check to see if there are any shows coming up that aren't too far away.

Thanks again for the tips.

:rofl2:

I flat out don't believe you. BFE, Arkansas and no gun shows? :rofl2:

SouthArk370Z 12-14-2014 11:17 AM

LOL We have a yearly "outdoor show" in town but it is mostly boats, camping equipment, storage sheds, &c. There were a few local gun dealers at the last show I went to but I can always call them on the phone if need be. :)

I'll figure something out. I was just hoping someone might be a 187H guru. The gun was free and broken when I got it - if I screw up, nothing lost. The barrel has some pitting and the rifling is very worn so I doubt it's a collectable.

Chuck33079 12-14-2014 11:19 AM

Do you have the old timer contingent at your local range or gun shop? That's usually where I go first with questions.

SouthArk370Z 12-14-2014 11:53 AM

I've got two guys in town that may be able to help. One of them has been gunsmithing for several decades and the other "specializes" in military rifles (so he may not be much help). Everything around here, except WalMart, is closed on Sundays so I'll do some more web searching.

The more I look at the rifling, the more I'm wondering if it's worth spending $25-30 on it for a firing pin. It may end up hanging on a wall. I'd still like to take it apart and see what makes it tick. Just want to be sure I can put it back together. :)

SouthArk370Z 12-16-2014 09:24 AM

I didn't find a manual but got some advise from a guy that owned one a long time ago. Wouldn't you know it? One of the screws was TIGHT and even though I was using the proper screwdriver, I ended up buggering the head. :( I might be able to get it out with some small vise-grips. Luckily, the screw is still available - I can order a few when I get the firing pin. :)

decided to go head and buy a right hand version (even tho im left handed) Savage 110 338 Lapua. the only reason why I needed it to be left is reloading. that's it. the bolt action and the more im practicing with the right, the better im getting so...without further or do....

to come: Bi-pod, and the Vortex Viper PST scope. and a silencer

I'm lefty too but I always buy right handed bolt action. You can keep your hand on the trigger when cycling the bolt for faster follow up shots haha. Let us know how it shoots. I've been looking into savage but I know that had a quality problem back in the day. At least according to my old man.
