I have an Eotech FTS 3X magnifier I switch between rifles for the very occasional situations where I can use it. It works pretty well for those 100 yard+ shots, but it's not a real good substitute for an actual scope at those ranges.

I'm currently running a comp M4S. I have not had a chance to shoot it at "longer" distances, yet, though.

As a civilian, 0-300 yards is my main concern, with maximum emphasis on 0-25 yards. 0-25 yards is the most likely distance that someone will assault me from. 25-300 yards is the most likely distance I will shoot a deer/hog/whatever from.

I can tag the targets just fine with irons out to 300+, and shoot around 2 MOA at 100 yards with them and M855 using something to brace/rest the rifle against. I doubt a RDS with 2MOA dot will compromise my ability any.

That said, I tried to like the 4X and then 3.5X ACOG's. They just didn't do it at 0-25 yards, the area I place the MOST emphasis on. The 1.5X Mini-Acog I had kicked ***. The only problem was transitional lighting killed things for me, and the green reticle washed out on foliage. Sure, 532nm wavelength is not found in nature, but that reticle isnlt 532nm in ALL lighting, especially shade. So I went with red, and that sucked at night. Very very poor behind a white light.

So, here is what i ended up with. *still waiting on my Form 4 tax-stamp so I can throw the SF 556-212 on there*

Very nice, clean AR. I like the Spike's Tacktical stuff. I didn't like the brown Magpul components at first, but seeing build like yours and MacCool's, it is growing on me. I might just do that for my next build...

stunner253 02-23-2012 03:40 AM

Thanks man. Me too i didn't like the dark earth color at first but it grew on me plus i want to be a little different. My next build will be an AR pistol Noveske lower and adams arm Gas piston upper with 7" barrel. Im gonna build this with all black furniture.

Got this 1943 Walther P-38 from my father in-law. Had to order a take down pin that fits right under the barrel in that hole. Otherwise the gun is in great shape!

Can't wait to fire her.

Wish list is a Glock 22 Gen 4. Just trying to convince the wife:p

m4a1mustang 02-23-2012 07:03 AM

Just wanted to vent my frustration... I've been so busy lately I haven't been able to make it to the range in the last ~2 months.

At least I'm still doing dry-fire practice... :ugh2:

I feel defenseless... my 1911 is at the Kimber Custom Shop getting some work done and my PX4 is at Robar getting refinished. All I have left is my AR chambered in .22 LR. =P

For my 1911, undercut trigger guard, 30 LPI front strap checkering and flatten and serrate slide top. For my PX4 I'm getting it refinished in NP3 Plus.

 when are you getting them back so we can hit the range

i think im going to do my first mods on the gun this week. i have to mod the slide stop because the plunger is a bit long and i have to use a too to push it in when reinstalling the stop.
and i think im going to be a little ghetto and paint dots on my sights because is hard to see

Not for another few weeks, there's never a definite time frame when custom work is involved. I’ll let you know so we can bust a few caps.

ive been going so it doesnt bother me when haha.
check the group chat on fb i posted a question

xdeslitx 02-26-2012 09:32 PM

i feel like such a newb...i was shooting really low and i thought it was my fault
so i ask the guy next to me for pointers

the guy looks at my target and i had about a 1 inch grouping at 7 yards

turns out my adjustable rear sights weren't calibrated from the factory
so i have to zero it in the next time i go since i ran out of bullets
wasted so much ammo thinking i was shooting wrong the whole time

Lol. I'd like to tell you that it happens to all of us, but I can't. Oh well, live and learn! Good work on the grouping though. Like at least the guy didn't say "uh yeah it's your sucky skills." :)

Last weekend I visited my sister's family in Knoxville and treated my nephew to a shooting session a the local shooting range. I have been thinking about getting a 1911 here in the next year, so we rented a Kimber Ultra Carry II. Of course the gun is of high quality, light has a great feel. I have to give props to my nephew for being quite the marksman and I was quite impressed how safely he handled a handgun.

With that being said, relative to shooting my H&Ks I am a terrible shot with a 1911! Partially this is due to the more squarish trigger and the short barrel. Oh well, I guess I definitely have to purchase one now :)

Nice 1911 xdeslitx...I am sure you are very pleased with your purchase!

thanks. im very happy with it...just need to make a few minor modifications like painting dots on the sights (black on black is no good i cant see anything)
hopefully this will go well. it will be a little tough because both my sights are serrated and there no cup indentation for the dots

Well if worse comes to worse I am sure that there are tons of affordable, good quality replacement sights for it to be had on the interweb...The beauty of owning a 1911!

A couple new firearms related items

After a bit of a wait, my Glock 19 Gen 4 came in finally. The Concealed Handgun permit only took about 45 days to obtain. I am psyched about both. Next purchase; a Comp-Tac IWB holster for my P2000K (thanks for the recommendation Steve).

it's not perfect but at least i can see the sights now lol

What about drilling small holes into the sights before painting to give it a cleaner look? This is just me thinking, I'm a little OCD tho.

i don't trust myself with drilling my sights.
the way it is right now it is still reversible...if i drill there's no going back. and i don't have clamps and stuff to keep the gun still while im drilling
eventually i'll shell out money for aftermarket sights

X, All you need to change is your front sight. Go to dawsonprecison.com and look for their fiber optic front sight specific to your gun. Even without those dots on the rear (sorry), you'll be able to easily acquire them. You can PM me and I'll give you info on a good gunsmith in the SFV. Probably $40 to install the front sight. Kinda pricey bec it's a dovetail fit.

xdeslitx 02-29-2012 12:33 PM

i ended up taking off the paint from the rear sights last night...it didn't look good
kept the paint on the front sight though since that one dried pretty well.

anyone here done any IDPA? are there entry fees and stuff? I've looked at 2 local sites that host IDPA but they don't list fees

I haven't participated in any pistol or rifle competition events, but I have been taking handgun training courses that are specific to concealed handgun techniques. The only prize is that hopefully you won't shoot yourself in the foot (or worse) and be able to shoot a bad guy if that situation ever arose. The training is pretty enjoyable because they set up interesting shooting scenarios.

I bet IDPA events would be fun though!
