IMO the 19 is such a practical gun that I would lean toward that. In the near future when I get a full-sized Glock, I am going for the 22 (.40 S&W).

Neither, Walter PPQ or HK P30

Just kidding. I have a Gen 3 19.

Just FYI, I had 2 Gen 4 17s. Both 17s extracted to my forehead and chest. I don't buy the limp wristing arguement when i can immediately pick up my Gen 3 19 or HK P30 and have it eject at 3-4 o'clock.

Too funny and almost predictable. Did you get the obligatory 33 rd. magazine yet?

9mm striker-fired semi-automatic like a Glock 26, 19, 17, or a Smith and Wesson M&P 9c, 9 or 9L/Pro depending on whether you intend to carry it. I'm not a huge fan of Glocks, mainly for their aesthetics, but there is no denying that they are well-designed, rugged handguns that are simple to maintain and shoot, and they are cost-effective. 9mm is the way to go - low recoil, ammo is cheap and available.

There are many, many, many excellent handguns out there, most of the good ones between $700 and $1000. Glocks and M&Ps, at ~$500, are a bargain as defensive firearms.

Please do not try to teach yourself how to shoot your new firearm, and please do not rely only on the instruction course required for your handgun or concealed-carry permit. Get additional training that focuses on how to use a firearm effectively and how to take care of it. THEN go out to the range and shoot it and practice with it. A lot.

As a size reference, M4A1Mustang posted above, what appear to be a Glock 26, Glock 19, Glock 17.

or start off with a .22 like a sig mosquito or something so you can get trained not to flinch and work on your trigger pull

What can I say... I'm a reluctant Glock fanboy.

While trying to decide if I wanted the 19 or 17 I looked at 1911s. My boss wants one somewhere around $1000 give or take. They had a nice Kimber and Springfield around $850 and some more right around $1000-1250 that I think he'd like.

Unfortunately I really, really like them too.
