I would think the better choice would be taking over a small island where you could bring some animals, plant crops and live off the land. The sea would create a nice natural barrier to keep them out without having to build anything in a hurry.

Don't forget that fishing would also yield plenty of food. For emergancies, bags of dry dogfood is your best bet. No one will even think to steal them off the shelves in the mob action that will surely follow the first Zwave.
